What's the craziest thing you have done to be able or allowed (for us married folks) to buy a new gun?

I bought my first AR last night and I believe that I have been bitten buy the bug. I have been burning up the net looking for accessories and other AR stuff. Then I find this at CDNN:

cdnn_1819_11085370.gif

BRAND NEW • Colt Factory SP1 Upper Assmebly • Tear Drop Forward Assist • Triangular Handguards • 20" Chrome Lined Barrel with Flash Hider • Small Hole Upper • SP1 Sights

And, I want it BAD!

I am ashamed to say that I have was just in the other room begging my wife like a 5 year old in a toy store.

" Oh, can I please have this? Please, please, please, please? I'll do the dishes for a whole month. I'll even give Trevor (our 3 year old) his bath and put hime to bed every night"

She wasn't amused. It was truly a pathetic site. So, now I have to get it the old fashioned way. Save the money and wait.

Have other ever gotten this bad?

Not had to do anything. Young and single. However I had a LONG wait to turn 21 for my first handgun.

Okay, what is it with these dang AR bugs going around?

I just pulled my AR out of lay-a-way, with digging in my savings, just because I wanted to change out the uppers (and dang, they made that so easy didn't they?).

I also did so because my .223 upper is the way it was supposed to be made, with the bayonet lug (now I have to get a bayanet) and a real (cut, not faked) flash surpressor. And what's great about that is that the flash suppressor can be removed leaving me a threaded barrel so I can add a silencer when I get the money.

The only one that I have to beg is Georgie and as long as she has food, water, and her spot in my chair and bed she gives me no grief about it :D.

Oh, forgot to add, make sure it's a complete assembly. Most of your AR uppers come without the bolt carrier and the changing handle, thinking that you would rather just use the ones that you have I think the extra $100 for a complete is worth it, you just have to snap it in and go without changing any parts.

I love my wife and wouldn't change anything that I have now, but you are some lucky individuals. For some of us part of being married means sometimes asking permission. Or just buy it and suffer her wrath.

It is easier to ask permission than to beg forgiveness. :D

I'm all for honoring your wife and all, but I will never beg my wife for anything. If she is so inconsiderate of my desires that I have to beg for something that makes me happy, time to find someone who is concerned with my feelings.

Well to be honest, I am a spoiled brat only child. This sharing thing hasn't come easy.

My wife has been very good this year. After Christmas 2003 she let me buy a gun under the agreement that I wouldn't buy anymore and we could put the funds to other uses like the house. At the time I had 2 guns. Somehow during this year of not buying any guns, I ended up with 9. So, I can't complain.

We just try to consult each other on almost any purchases that are made. It works for us. She certainly hasn't let me go without. She is one fo those wives that will go without so that others can be happy.

I gave up trying to save for BIG items, like M1A, or my FAL, so I changed aim, and started buying MilSurp cheap! Now, I have Mosinitis! Darn if these things ain't addictin'!

Guess that’s the main upside to not being married or even having a g/f significant other you’re shacked up with. You can buy what you want when you want as long as the cash is there.

I tried the marriage thingy; oh man was it a disaster, maybe I found the world’s worst example everyone else I know who’s married likes it.

I still wake up at night screaming in a cold sweat.

:uhoh:

better read some more before you buy an SP1 upper
what lower will fit this SP1?
whats the twist of the rifling?

I don't make any large buy like this without doing my research.

From the reading I've done and the replies to posts asking about the fit it would seem that these will fit on any standard lower.

The rifling is 1/12 twist.

It is listed as a "small hole" upper, so it will mate with a standard lower just fine. If it turns out to be a "big hole" upper, you only need a $6 offset pin to make it work correctly.

With the 1/12 twist, you will only be able to shoot 55gr bullets accurately. If you go heavier, the rifling isn't fast enough to stablize the heavier bullet. 55gr ammo is the most common inexpensive ammo out there, so that shouldn't be an issue. I have a Colt SP1 complete rifle, and it shoots the 55gr just great.

Man,... hearing about all of you married people makes me wonder if I will ever want to go for it... seems like it could be a form of slavery. I guess thats only if you don't marry a 'good one'...

I guess thats just a side effect of being young and single.. I'm only 20. Full time college student. Heck, I already have 13 guns, 6 of which are pistols, and 4 of those I got this year (HK USP Tactical, HK P2000, Glock 22, Ruger MKII). I just picked up a Benelli M1 Tactical last week.

I can see how you got the AR bug... I've been thinking about getting a new upper.. but thats a long time comming. No more guns for a while.. need to become efficient with them. Then focus on getting myself my CCW, and some training.

Good luck with your AR Upper. Looks nice.

I got you all beat

Well the story goes like this. Back about 9 years ago(11/96) my 1st, and at the time, only handgun was stolen. For months I wanted a handgun, but didn't have the resources at the time to fulfill my desires. Around 03/97 a gunshop not far from me was having a promotional sale. A Smith & Wesson Sigma SW9V for $287.00. I fell for it Hook,Line and Sinker. That was pretty much because the Sigma was fairly new on the block and not much was known about them. Well the word got out. I can't give it away. So, after purchasing an additional 3, 10 round mags and later on down the road 2 hi-caps for $80 a piece I'm stuck with the damned thing. I still have a few options to try and correct some of it's problems. Hey, I can do it, I've got a DREMMEL tool.

Man,... hearing about all of you married people makes me wonder if I will ever want to go for it... seems like it could be a form of slavery. I guess thats only if you don't marry a 'good one'..

It's not about being a slave. Marriage is a partnership. If you were in buisseness with someone you wouldn't make a purchase that may effect your overhead without consulting your partner would you.

And don't you mean proficient.

Like I'm going to post that info here LOL.

My wife was pretty understanding when I explained to her why a shotgun was different than a rifle...and why I needed one...then a second one.
She caved in when I told her that I might not be able to buy an assault rifle in the future....so I need to get one while the gettin's good (Thanks Bill and Hillary). She thought I was prudent to take advantage of that "once in a lifetime - steal of a deal" I found on the net. She was actually very understanding for the ten or so. Now I just have to sell one to get one...or figure out more creative ways to finance my toys.

That's funny.

It seems that is the way I sound a lot of the times.

Reminds my of the Jeff Foxworthy but about the Weasle gun.

"Factory SP1" and "Small Hole" just don't go together in the same sentence. I'd be rather paranoid about this one. The graphic has an odd perspective issue, but I'm not quite comfortable that the front pin hole is the same size as the rear one. Please, ask LOTS of questions before you buy this.

I don't have an issue of Shotgun News handy, but I seem to recall Sarco selling an early M16 upper for a reasonable price. That would be guaranteed to have both holes small.

That's simple, I had to buy her a gun - a very specific gun.

Early in our marriage, my wife voiced concern about firearms and young children. To put it another way, she capped the number of guns I could have.

I'm fairly fllexible and the cap on the number of guns I could have didn't bother me a lot. The next time the gun bug bit me, I just traded off the gun I liked the least to make room for my new purchase. BIG mistake. I traded away the only gun my wife liked.

Two things came out of my debacle; I had to buy back what promptly became 'my wife's gun' and she graciously revoked the cap on the number of guns that I could have.

My wife is great - I mean she hates to tell me no. She did tell me no today when I picked up my $5500 Uzi and wanted a radio-control helicopter, but it's rare. :)

begging my wife like a 5 year old in a toy store.

Well mine knows I'll throw a full-bore face-down arm-and-legs-thrashing tantrum if I have to. Thankfully I haven't had to do it - yet! :p

I work as a security officer, and I was first issued a Taurus model 82 .38spl. I received permission from my supervisor to purchase my own weapon because as you know Taurus revolvers are known to jam, and I wanted a reliable weapon. I went to a gun show and purchased a .357 S&W model 28. That is the only time that I went to a show to purchase a particular type of firearm. :)

My wife and I are the same. For bigger ticket items, I like to know what she's spending, and I don't mind telling her what I'm spending. Though its primarily my job, we work through our budget together. If I want something but she's uncomfortable spending the money, we don't get it. Same is true for her purchases.

Lot of people get married thinking its just like the single life, but with a roommate. Lots of divorces as a result. Marriage is a covenant, a true partnership. You don't have to consult each other the way my wife and I do, if that isn't how you want to do it, but you do have to compromise some things, or the odds are the marriage won't work. You either think the benefits are worth it, or you don't.

I'm sure I'd have at least another gun or two if I wasn't married. I'd much rather have my wife. (not to mention the five little shooters.)

edited to ad: the most desperate I've been to get a gun was when I called a store daily for a week to see if they'd gotten my FFL's form in the mail yet. Last day I asked the guy to go through his mail box to see if it was there. It was, and probably had been for a couple days. (which was the only reason it was the last day I called.)
