in terms of the manufacturer, would it be more damaging to pay fines, settle lawsuits or loss of reputation?

i would think loss of reputation because once you have bad publicity, it's game over and you will have lots of trouble selling your product.

what do yall think?

I'm out here, but the question was worded unattractively.
You didn't give me the choice I needed:

Do the right thing, because it's right.

Funny thing about integrity. When you have integrity you don't worry so much about saving money over reputation.

The thing about a reputation is that a recall gives you a bad rep, look at Ruger. At the same time Glock could have thousands of 40 cal's or Gen4's blowing up and, so long as they pretend it isn't a problem, everyone will turn a blind eye until the problem is terrible.

I could be wrong, but I think "Willful Negligence" is a HUGE "no no" in lawsuits. Basically as long as the problem isn't huge, meaning people aren't getting severely injured or killed, they are better of "financially" to hope it goes away.

I vote for companies that "Do the right thing, because it's right." Sad to say they are not common.

Depends on what's considered important when a malfunctions.

Btw, I accidentally a whole coca cola bottle.

May years ago after hunting all day I pulled open the bolt on my Remington 700--the gun fired.I wondered about that for years---what did I do to make the gun fire???
One day I went into Handgun Control, Inc website---to see what the evil people were up to.
They had an article saying that Remington knew they had a defect in certain Remington 700's & refused to make a recall on the safety that let the gun fire as it was unloaded.
If you called Remington about it--they said you would have to pay for the repair--this problem was not well known.
I sold mine to a gunsmith----too bad---it was a fine 6MM Rem.

what do yall think?
I think that this question has nothing to do with guns, and could just as easily be asked for cars or washing machines or computers.

Sadly, discussions about business ethics, liability shields, and other such relevant factors have no place on THR (being focused on guns and the RKBA, ya know).
