I'm a new HP owner. It's actually an FEG PJK-9HP. Anyway, it's NIB. The guy at the gun shop showed me how to take it down by removing the slide and barrel....blah blah...basic stuff. So, I took it next door to show my neighbor. He's a cop, and I was showing him about the mag safety, and how you couldn't pull the trigger if the mag is removed.

He tried to rack the slide, and it wouldn't go back but maybe 3/4" to 1" past the rear of the frame! It went far enough back that you can barely see into the chamber, but not nearly far enough back to strip off and chamber a round if the mag was loaded!

What gives? Did I mess it up demonstrating the mag safety? Did the guy at the gun shop screw it up when he put the slide back on? I'm freaking out!

Take it back to the gun store where you bought it and ask them to show you again and explain what the problem is. Most dealers have no problem helping out in this area as far as I know, unless something is really messed up, then you may need a gun$mith. Good Luck

For a fella who is generally ignorant of Hi-Powers but may own one in the future, how would you go about fixing things if it is indeed an upside-down guide rod causing the problem?

Is there anything special you have to do to disassemble the gun, or will it field strip as per usual, thus allowing you fix the situation.

How do you take the slide off if you can't get the slide back far for the safety to catch in the slide? I don't think the slide release will push out unless the slide is all the way back....?

Do not shoot that Hi Power until the store you bought it from has examined it! If you have the guide rod in upside down (IT IS SO EASY TO DO) then shooting it that way can cause major damage to the slide. And get them to show you the correct way.

I make a point, when field stripping mine, to leave the screwdriver in the hole of the guide rod, the spring on the guide rod, and put the whole array off to a side together. Then, when reassembling, it's ready.

This is the only weak point to the best weapon (next to Mamma Deuce) that John Moses ever made!

Jaydubya,

Come on now.....you know that the Auto-5 is THE best JMB gun of all TIME!:D I'm just going to take it back to the shop. I went by there today before going to work, but didn't have the pistol with me. The guy was very appologetic, and I kept re-assuring him that I wasn't there to scold him or complain.....just wanted to know how to fix it.

He said that if the slide would go back even a little, that I could use a brass punch and drive out the slide release. But, others have said that's a "no-no"....so I think I'm just going to take it back to the shop and have their smith take care of it (hopefully on the house!)

Thanks, though, for all of the great replies. The internet and THR ROCK!
