Never really had a specific firearm in my collection designated for carry in the car, usually just whatever is on my hip would be it, but am thinking about picking something up to keep in the car and got thinking about what caliber/capacity to consider.

Just curious what folks are using for this role.

The one I am carrying on my person.

Or a small/mid size .38 or .357 revolver

Haha, you know my local Cabelas has a load of post war production M1 carbines...you have me thinking.. perhaps Mini 14 w/ folding stock.. :p

I don't have a CCW for my car, but if I were to pick one, it'd probably be something in .357mag or 10mm for penetration.

Vehicle defense....

I used to think a Taurus Judge or Public Defender or S&W Governor in 410 shotshell & .45LC to be practical.
Then I watched a few online videos & read a few printed articles about how the extreme spread of the shot shells can be highly unreliable/risky. :uhoh:

A .44magnum with a .44spl JHP or frangible(MagSafe or Hornady Critical Defense) could do well. I'd add a CT lasergrip too to get a better shot one-handed or at a odd angle.
Using a revolver in a vehicle may cause hearing loss(combat deafness) or temporary loss of vision.
You might not have ideal conditions to return fire or use lethal force on a threat.
Having a larger caliber or using rounds that do well against barriers like auto-glass or plastic/steel may help too.
A .44spl snub like a Ruger AK or a Charter Arms Bulldog can do well. .357magnum revolvers can work too but they are loud, have recoil & muzzle flash.

I usually keep a .357 snub close at hand in my truck. Compact, handy, packs a punch.

I keep an old Type 53 rifle under my truck seat.

I carry always, pant on, gun on, 1911 45 or Kahr p45. I also keep my carbon 15 in the truck with 4 magazines in the door panel. Call me paranoid...

Don't have a "truck gun" as like others here I don't like leaving a gun in my vehicle unattended. If for whatever reason I were to go that route I would probably go with my Ruger SR9c. Stainless steel and polymer construction would make for a low maintenance set-up along with the gun itself being relatively compact in size for use in tight quarters.

1911 on my hip along with 2 spare mags

Glock 23 in the waaay back with 4 mags, 1911 in the console along with 6 extra mags. Always at least one long gun in car, generally an AR-15 or AK, sometimes more than one. Don't call me paranoid, call me well prepared.

Nothing special and not my edc but I picked up an Armscor 206 snub nose at just over 200$ it goes bang every time and not worried about it getting hurt

M1 Carbine.

What? It's a mini-van. Got lots of room.

I have several M1 carbines. One is a beater USGI I picked up for $500. Parts are everywhere so they are easy to rebuild. Nothing like a good 100 yd carbine with a 15 rd mag for SD. I like them because the noise factor is about half of an AR. Easy to reload for with a straight walled case. I never understood why they aren't more popular than they are.

My only "truck gun" is my EDC if I have to leave it locked up while going to the post office or something like that.

I've pondered a truck gun, but I get too paranoid about potential accountability if someone breaks into or steals my truck with loaded weapons in it.

YMMV

I keep a S&W sd9ve with me in the car with extra accessories in the get home bag. Originally I decided keep a separate firearm handy because I felt that arming and disarming in tight quarters while hassling with belts and restraints was dangerous. Now it's part of a bigger plan, but I still don't like fooling around with my ccw unnecessarily and I could never draw it easily from concealment if required.

I carried a gun in my vehicle for decades. Stopped doing so when I started carrying on my person on a regular basis. When I did carry a gun in my vehicle it was a J-Frame revolver so I could slip it in my pocket when I exited the vehicle.
