Yeah. Laid down a lot of suppressive fire at bandits, who had shotguns.

BTW, ten years or so ago, one of the gun rags (I don't remember which one) recounted the story of a couple of guys who were out camping that were assaulted by armed robbers. IIRC, camper #1 was wounded, but camper #2 grabbed his camp rifle (mini-14 in this case) and dropped one robber; the second fled. Wish I could remember the whole story; was pretty interesting.

Does anyone have a link to the details of this story? I'd like to refresh my memory on it, but I have no idea where I read it.

A quality HK94 clone (which run around 1K or so), such as one built by Murray Urbach ( the HK Master in Garland, Texas) or Jason Cotter ( the owner of Investment Grade Firearms )..

I would go with the PC9 also. Had a Marlin .357 lever gun. Nice, but I think up close defense should be semi-auto. The PC9 is dead reliable. Accurate enough, sturdy etc.

Oddly, if I could only own one rifle, this is what it would be.

Honestly the camp rifle is likely to be a .22 or a shotgun, unless it's hunting season. In that case the camp rifle might be a 30-06 a 30-30 an 870 or a 223 AK variant. (you know, for coyotes).

In my mind, a plinker is a .22.

All around camp chores/survival/defense/game getter all in one? Shotgun.

I never go in the woods without a serious handgun though.

Marlin model 30A in .30-30. Not quite as compact as some other mentioned, but works well.

Maybe I can convince the "Home Finance Committee" i.e Mrs. Foggy that I really need that "War Baby" i.e US Rifle Cal .30 Carbine M-1

Well, a guy can still dream, right? ? ? ? ;)

My new Marlin 1894C, .357 Magnum, 18.5 inch barrel, lever action. Six pounds--carry it anywhere on a shoulder sling. Ought to do OK.
A couple of years ago, camping down in The Red River Gorge, I met two...moonshiners, I guess. It was their eyes. I've NEVER seen eyes like THAT!! Shiny eyes, glow in the dark eyes. They looked me up and down 'till they saw the Bushmaster Shorty slung on my shoulder complete with 30 round mag. They must have had the ~"This guy's a little nuts feeling too". "We're just here for the water". (Me) "Help yourself". But we all kept staring at each other. That night, the AR was fully loaded (with 28) and right beside my sleeping bag. (Not that I slept any.)

I could of sworn it was posted here in THR, but I can't seem to find it. :(

Currently, I prefer my M1 Carbine. I'd rather have a Marlin 1894C in .357, though. It would simply feel better in the environment, IMO.

Camp site companion

M1 carbine in M1A1 folding stock.

Out of the way when it needs to be, handy when it needs to be, light, user friendly, can be handled by anyone in camp (like my 8 year old if need be).

Of course, that's if I don't PLAN to use a rifle. If so, likely a Scout (or if really roughing it, a Mauser Pseudo-Scout).

(I assume that it goes without mentioning that I'll also have a .45 on my hip - but that's not part of the question as put forth).

Only one damn problem - not kosher due to that silly AWB....have to leave the M1A1 folding stock out of the picture and use a fixed one. Darn congresscritters

Marlin 1894S. Would prefer the P, but this was a deal I couldn't pass up. Wears a Lyman peep.

I have three carbines, M1 Carbine, Marlin 1894C in .357 and MechTech in .45. Of the three, I would go with the MechTech. Shorter and handier than the other two. Second would the be M1. The MechTech has a slight edge because it uses the 1911 frame. Number of possibilities here. Bring along another 1911, spare parts, common caliber and magazines.

I took my 20 gauge backpacking friday and saturday, and it held up really well. It's light and handy, and is surprisingly resistant to dirt and grunge.

undortunately, since i ended up carrying it without a sling the whole time, i need to refinish it.
