What's your favorite target?

There's a great selection, so I was interested in what you all use and the different advantages/disadvantages. I've typically used a sheet with targets and shoot 7/15 yards until I improve (lots of practice necessary). If I wanted a challenge I'd tape up a 3x5 index card with a blue dot drawn in the middle.

I guess I didn't do badly for someone who's only passed ~400 rounds of *anything* lifelong.

For informal plinking or teaching neophytes - $2 bag of oranges or green apples. Cheapest biodegradable reactive targets available.

Rest of my own drills are on steel targets near and far.

What Targets...

Well...

When I'm shooting slow and for accuracy I use a Small Bore 100 yd bullseye target at all ranges regardless of the weapon I'm using.

If I'm practicing point shooting I use a B-27 with pistols out to 25 yds.

If I'm practicing rapid fire with a rifle I will use the B-27 out to 50 yards. I especially like this target when I'm rapid firing my Win 94 (45LC). I will occasionaly put a B-27 up at 100 yds for shooting with my Saiga and Garand.

When I'm shooting my 22LR I exclusively use the Small Bore 100 yd bullseye target at all ranges out to 100 yds.

Slow and accurate... that's something else I need to work on.

So far, my practice regimen has been to load 5 rounds, take a bead, and fire those 5 off as fast as I can get the target back in my sight picture. I may be wrong, but I figured that it was better to practice in the "mode" that I was most likely to find myself using it in, and that was a SHTF, hit it-hit it-hit it NOW mode

Oh, and the best part about the improvised backlight is that it's even, not too bright, and when the air is dry it holds paper targets up all by itself

My favorite for rifles and handguns is clays (no, I don't shoot them out of the air like Henry Bowman, I lay them on the berm). Problem is, most ranges don't like/allow this.

On good days, I can use a post-it out to about 15 yards. Then again, on my bad days, I couldnt use myself if I wanted to...

I normally use redfield sight-in targets (they're orange on white, crappy pic was all I could find) available at the range. On my off days I go for the center to keep from shooting the ceiling or floor, on my better days I go for the smaller ones randomly. For example, I may shoot a group though one, or hit them in an X pattern, or go from one side to another and back, or something in double-taps, I just pick one and go for it.

Today I was just going for the large diamond. I cut, well bashed, my finger just above where the trigger normally rides. Not a big deal with my 1911s, however got interesting with my LDA.

For plinking, I usually stick with clays--they're cheap, fun to shoot, and don't require climbing the hillside that's our 'plinking range'.

For punching paper, I usually go with el-cheapo 9" circular paper plates, the sort you get in shrink-wrapped plastic, a couple of bucks for a few hundred. Put an orange target dot on the center, staple it up, and you've got the cheapest target you'll ever find, I think. Once I start moving out to longer ranges, I might have to find something a bit bigger...

Sometimes NRA bullseye's ..... sometimes Outers ''multi'' targets .. but hey .. targets are costly and I am a mean sob ..... so more often than not ...... it's a sheet of letter paper with a self-adhesive 3" orange sticker in middle!!

I do also have black and white sticky patch circles .. they extend a target's usefullness for ages!!

Otherwise ....... any sorta reactive target .. steel .. golf balls ... fruit .. oh so many fun things!!

Mostly I shoot this target with pistol and rifle from several yards to a couple hundred yards.

It's on 8x11 inch paper and whatever color the printer has left.

That works M2 .. but ..... forgot to say in my last post ... printing off targets seems less than economical ...... they suck so much damn ink!! I have plenty of files with target images but ... seems awful thirsty on ink or toner .... thus my orange sticker approach!!

M16A1 75 meter silhouette for longer than 50yds., The Hi-point ones with Osama bin Shot and Sodam Insane on them for close in! Milk jugs full of water for new shooters, and over 100yds. for me ocassionally.

I shoot Post-It notes with my air rifle at 20 meters in my backyard. I used to (try to) shoot empty 9mm cases when I had a bigger back yard, but it was more frustrating than satisfying.

At the farm it's usually paper plates with various rifles.

I buy very cheap ink on the internet and set the (Cannon) printer at the worst draft setting.
The draft setting doesn't use much ink.
It prints a crappy picture but it's good for targets.

I set the file's color (in Paint Shop Pro) to one color at a time so the printer isn't using a mixture of ink. I use up the blue first, then red, then what's left, green, yellow?

I haven't counted the targets I get out of a 2 to 4 dollar cartridge, but it's a lot.

The lines on the target were thicker but I made them thinner to save ink.

I've been known to use sheets of "printer paper" (the REALLY cheap stuff with the perferated holes on the edges for the old dot matrix printers) with one of those little sticky dots in the middle (the kind that come in little plastic packages stuck with four different colors).

I like rocks or sea shells, but for paper I like those little stickey dots you buy at the stationary store for my XP-100 and other .223s. But my best target are river otters I get $125 a pop for those case skinned. They aint that easy to hit.

I like "9 inch paper targets" (paper plates). For the budgets sake I have a separate garbage can for paper plates that can be used for targets after use. A sandwhich and some chips don't usually mess one up too bad. It would be a shame to just throw it away. By the way a paper plate is smaller than most adult chest areas. Good practice.
