I am looking at buying a Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 over the internet (Gunsamerica) but I have a question. The seller says that the gun has a 6 1/2 inch barrel but the serial number has an N prefix (N365XXX). Did any of the N prefix Model 29-2 come with a 6 1/2 inch barrel? I thought that the barrel length had been reduced to 6 inches around 1969 and the serial number on this gun I believe indicates it was made much later. Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated. I am far from knowledgeable on these. Thanks! Art G.

Art ... it would appear that ..... the 29-2, started 1961 thru 1982. In 1969 the ''N'' prefix began, at S/N N333454 .. so yours came after that but ..... it was 1979 that the 6 1/2" bbl was dropped, in favor of the 6".

Puts yours approx, guessing .. around early to mid 70's perhaps.

HTH.

Thanks!

I appreciate the info! Looks like the M29-2 I am looking at was made in 1977 according to a call I just made to Smith & Wesson. Also, as you said the 6 1/2" barrel would be correct. Thanks again and good shooting! Art G.

I have a nickel 29-2 of the same vintage. Although I would have liked to acquire a four- or five-screw 29, this one was more affordable, and there is no real functional difference.
