When something goes bump in the night?

Sorry this is going to be a bit off topic, but how exactly does a can of peas just...explode...? :scrutiny:

Because I have a can of peas in my pantry as well, and I do not want them to explode.

If a bacteria or fungus made its way into the can, it could explode. Decomposition / fermentation release gas, building pressure. Pea-Grenade!

Not sure of what caused my peas to go boom (I assume some sort of bacteria and associated pressure build up), but can say the smell after the explosion was the pleasantish scent of splattered sweet peas almost like an air freshener.

I had an incident when I first moved in with my roommate that caused me to think about this. In the middle of the night, I woke up to a loud bang in the kitchen. Roommate was still in bed (checked that first) and then I proceeded cautiously to the kitchen with my shotgun. THe house we rent is super weird (added on to multiple times) so anybody who manages to find their way inside will most likely be confused. When I got to the kitchen, the window was open, but the screen was still in place. What I figured was that the window (spring loaded) wasnt latched and sprang up on its own during the cool of the night.

After that, we decided our "policy" on bumps in the night. First, we have cameras and motion sensors around the outside of the house. If there's a bump outside, we know what sector it comes from by the tone of the beeping alarm, and can simply flip on a TV in my bedroom. Second, we installed door barricades, and a safety door to separate the bedroom area from the rest of the house. I won't say what they're made from, but they're study. We have also blocked off ground level windows and make very sure to keep them locked. This means that anything getting in will have to make TONS of noise. Any light bump we hear in the night may just be the water heater or an exploding can of peas, and therefore we can check or not check depending on how we feel.

If we hear a loud noise, we will simply hunker in our rooms. For peace of mind, we each have 2 way radios in our rooms, so that if something is amiss, we can communicate and check on each other without moving. It also helps that our bedrooms are set in the house such that if a threat were to come through the safety door, they would be illuminated, identified and caught in crossfire.

In retrospect, dashing into the kitchen with shotgun in hand wasnt the best idea....
