So I am going to buy either a Krag or Swedish Mauser in the next day or two. I sent off for my C&R earlier in the month though. When it comes will I only have to record future C&R item purchases, or will I have to add currently owned items that are on the C&R list?

I realize that C&R doesn't often get checked by the ATF, but how will I be able to show I owned them before I got it? I can keep the reciept, then what of some of my fathers old model Bearcats and Blackhawks that are on the list that I don't own but I am borrowing? No reciepts for those.

I am just trying to keep it all on the up and up.

Record everything you have now in a seperate log. I've got 2 logs, 1 for C&R and 1 for previously owned C&R/non-C&R firearms. Once you get your C&R you will have to record all C&R eligible firearms (even if you don't use your FFL to buy them).

Note that while you don't need to log your previously owned C&R items in your bound book you would need to log them out if you were to sell them. You wouldn't need to log the acquisition info. for the item you are selling, just enter something like "owned prior to licensure".

It doesn't hurt to log your existing weapons, but then again I haven't bothered.

Firearms Inventory

You have been given great advice.... I finally created an inventory of firearms, including everything C&R or no....I feel better for it, have put it off for years....
You are not responsible under the C&R license for items purchased or traded for before you obtained the license, if you sell and ship to another C&R holder after you are licensed, that transaction should be recorded.
I have enjoyed my C&R license --- more for looking and knowing I could buy without a middle-man....have fun.

One mroe question. What if I don't renew it in 3 years? Do I have to keep that book for ever?
No, the rule where records have to be kept for so many years applies to the other types of FFL licensees.

I am not definite, but I am pretty sure that the only firearms that have to be in the bound book are ones acquired by using the C&R FFL. If a previously owned C&R gun is sold, then if it was not bought with the FFL, then it does not have to be recorded in the bound book....even if it is sold to another C&R FFL.

Now, I have heard that it is ok to put the previously owned firearms in the bound book if you want to, but I don't because it might confuse a trace investigation in some way I can't imagine. Doesn't mean you can't do it if you feel comfortable doing so though.

ALL C&R-eligible firearms acquired after you obtain the C&R license must go into the bound book, regardless of whether or not they were bought using the C&R.

C&R-eligible firearms owned prior to obtaining the C&R license do not need to be entered into the bound book as long as you own them. You can also sell them through "normal" (i.e. non-C&R) channels such as through a regular FFL and/or to a non-C&R holder, without entering them in your bound book. If you sell one of your previously-owned C&R firearms to another C&R licensee, I believe you have to log it into your bound book before you can transfer it to the purchaser.

All C&R firearms acquired OR sold have to be logged in the book. It does not matter whether you used the license to do it.

C&R guns owned before the license is issued do not have to be logged, but it's ok to put them in if you want to.

If you let the license expire, you do not have to send the book to FFL or even keep it.
