I have an opportunity to purchase a M1 Garand at very good price but I will have to rebarrel the rifle if I want to shoot it. The current barrel is very worn and I was told it won't shoot better than 5" at 50 yards using various CMP ammo.

Where can I have the rifle rebarreled and how much would it cost for the barrel and the work? I 'm not looking to make it into a match rifle... just a nice shooter.

BTW the rifle was offered to me for $350

Thanks.

A new parkerized barrel for the Garand in .30-06 is $179.95, plus $9.95 shipping from the CMP estore. If you have a local gunsmith who works on Garands, getting it installed and the chamber finish reamed for proper headspace shouldn't run more than $100. The CMP also has Garand barrels in .308 calibre for $189.95, if you want to change calibres.

If we knew where you are, we could be more helpful. I promise I won't come knocking on your door.

And 5" at 50 yards? I will bet a dollar that is the shooters fault, not the barrel.

I highly recommend Shuffs Parkerizing, best prices, workmanship and 5 day turn around
New Criterion Barrel $170.00 $70.00 installation
He has reparked 3 Garands rebarreled two and done trigger work for me. I have been very happy with his work
If you go with him tell him Orlando sent ya

For something different Shuff's will install a .35 Whelen barrel for $395. I am keeping an eye out for a garand in good shape with a shot out barrel to do this conversion.

...or rather than get hosed by "technical inspection" and all that from Fulton, you could just scrounge around for a used GI barrel, then find a local smith. I've bought probably a half-dozen GI take-off barrels in the last year in varying degrees of perfectly-serviceable wear for under a hundred dollars, and the last one I had screwed on cost me $75 at the local smith.

Really, you can do it yourself with a homebrew receiver wrench, the only even slightly complicated part is making sure the splines line up right. Then you verify headspace to the bolt, and might have to try a second bolt to get one that fits right. Not tremendously difficult, but some people aren't DIY'ers.

It's about as complicated as a warclub, meant to use drop-in parts installed by draftee armorers in a warzone.

I have purchased CMP Criterion barrels and tried to install them. I found, along with a number of people in the gun club, that you have to remove about .002" from the barrel shoulder or you will over torque the barrel in the receiver.

I overtorqed my barrel because I don't have a lathe, and the barrel way cockeyed in the receiver and shot poorly.

I took it off and installed a Danish instead.

I have not found a better price for an installed Douglas premimum, than Champion Choices deal. http://www.champchoice.com/prod-DOUGLAS_M1_GARAND,_30_06,_4_GROOVE,_1_10_BARREL-736.aspx

For less than...

it would cost you to rebarrel that rifle, you can get one from the CMP....chris3

Orlando, having bought 3 service grades and a correct grade, the one rack grade I have won't shoot as well as the service grades. I shoot High Power in the Master class so I can tell when it is the rifle.

The barrels sold by the CMP are good barrels over all and the price is right. I don't know if Champions Choice is still offering the service but I would check with them.
