I recently bought a new 580 series mini-14 GB. After getting the irons zeroed, I mounted a scope to test several different types of .233 ammo to see what the gun likes. I had boxes or partial boxes of about 8 different types of 223 ammo. Everything from 69 grn Federal gold medal all the way down to SA surplus. The gun put 7 rounds of one particular load into about 1.25" at 100 yards, and this is with the terrible factory trigger. The load that did this was Winchester's 45 grn hollowpoint load that comes in the 40 round value packs. A mini-14 that shoots this way out of the box is pretty rare in my experience, so of course I ran out to my local Walmart to stock up on this gun's preferred fodder. Wal mart only had the 22-250 value packs that use the same 45 grn hp bullet. Over the course of the weekend, I went to 2 walmarts, Academy, Sportsmans warehouse, and a local gunshop. I even went online and no one has these in stock. I checked Natchez, Cabelas, Ammoman, ammunition to go, and sportsman's guide. Did Winchester quit making this load? Is it related to the war? Does anyone know what gives or where I can get some?

Thanks!

I have seen it at Midway online. Not in the value packs but price was cheap enough that I recall. One thing to note is that .223 is getting harder to find. Midway was all out of any .223 bullet in 55 grains. Things are getting tougher in that caliber. If you find it, you might want to buy a S**T load. Bill

I feel your pain! This stuff keeps TIGHT groups out of my rugers so I am constantly on the lookout for it. There are NO boxes of Winchester "white box" at ANY of the WalMarts or major sporting goods stores in NW Montana or in the Idaho panhandle. They have all the 22-250 that you could want but NO .223. I am down to 3 boxes. It has not been available for the last few months and the sales people do not seem optimistic that they will get any soon.

I must have lucked out.

I just picked up a value pack of .223 at my local Walmart for $52+tax about a week ago. Must be a regional thing.

~$150/1000 for Wolf 62gr FMJ:

If you use the right coupons, you can negate shipping charges at sportsman's guide. Yes, its steel cased, but its polymer coated steel cased. No, it wont harm your chamber or extractor, anyone who claims otherwise is either grossly misinformed or trying to sell you something else. Yes, sportsman's guide has had customer service issues in the past, but I personally have never experienced those problems. You may get what you pay for, but you shouldn't pay any more than you have to.

Sportsmans Guide is a good option if they have the ammo in stock.

In January I ordered 900 rounds of 62 gr .223 for about $113 shipped. I was immediately backordered to February 11. When Feb. 11 came around, they pushed my backorder to August 31!

So, like I was saying, SG is a good option for the prices they offer, assuming they actually have the product in stock.

From what I understand, Winchester is using their full capacity to manufacture 5.56 for military contracts. There may be one run this Summer for civilian consumption. There was a thread on ARF.com about some made in Israel Q3131A coming in country. Wicked expensive though. It's tough even finding 55 and 62 grain FMJ bullets right now.

I haven't seen any 223 but the 40gr stuff around here for a long while and even that's real expensive. Over the summer, I came across Remington 55gr. for like $3 a box. I bought all they had, 8 boxes. The guy said "You must have a real varmint problem." :) "Nah, just plinkin'." My M16A1 clone AR shot it all up like candy that afternoon.

I was buying reloading supplies at Gander Mtn. 2 weeks ago. The guy with me picked up 2 or 3 boxes of the 40 grain Winchester .223 Rem while we were there.

Saw the 40-rd WWB packs at Wal*mart in Central Ohio on Monday 2-26 as a matter of fact. They have been running low lately on that, and the CCI blazer brass 9mm 115gr 50rnd boxes. So I buy when I see it. THe 9mm CCI brass is $6.99/50, and it's now cheaper than the WWB 100-pack.

From Winchester:

"Thank you very much for taking the time to contact us here at Winchester Ammunition. We are always glad to hear from our many friends and customers who share in the shooting sport.

The ammunition you are looking for is currently on a backorder status. Winchester Ammunition is making every effort to fill these open orders as quickly as possible."

Cabela's (at least in Buda, TX) is running a $6.99 sale on WWB 20-rd 55gr. from March 1-4.

Who knows, maybe they stockpiled some in the warehouses if Winchester is claiming backorder???

There was a crapload of the WWB 55 gr FMJ at a local sporting goods store two days ago when I was in there. I think it was in boxes of 40. Only problem it was like almost 40 cents per round so I had to pass...
