I recently found a colt ar15 complete upper in my grandfathers basement and have searched the entire house for the lower and cannot find it. The upper seems to be fine barrel and gas tube are clear and don't seem to have ever been assembled. The real question is where can I find a colt lower to finish my grandfathers build.

I called Colt a couple years ago to try and buy a new lower for a Colt SP-1 that had the trigger and hammer pin holes wore out. Older colts used a .172 pin Vs the new smaller pin .154 models. Colt informed me that they do not sell lowers separate in any form or configuration. Is your upper stamped Colt? If it has the large pin hole in the front of the upper you can buy an offset pin that will work on anybodys lower.

It is stamped colt not sure on the pin size but i'm sure it's the older style purchased in 1984 according to the receipt in the box.I would like a original colt lower and have found no one who sells them in good condition. I intend to shoot the gun but it will be a safe queen of sorts.

Aero Precision out of tacoma washington makes lowers for Colt when manufacturing quanities are high (unconfirmed but general knowledge). It won't say colt but there are VERY nice lowers.

New Colt lowers, or Aero Precision lowers, or any other current AR lower will not fit the commercial Colt upper made in 1984.

I'm pretty sure the pin size and hole spacing used by Colt then are completely different then any Colt M16, or any commercial lower made now.

As noted, you can get an offset front pin bushing to adopt it to any standard commercial lower, but it is kind of a Mickey Mouse workaround that can lead to a broken front pin hole lug if you open it without holding your mouth right.

You can buy complete Colt lowers, but your old upper is not going to fit on current production Colt lowers either as they are standard pin spacing now.

mother fiddle stix. It didn't work as expected it seems to be to narrow to match the upper luckly the guy let me try it before I bought it these things are pricey.

If you insist on a Colt marked lower, yes. Other mil spec lowers (stripped) can be had for less than seventy bucks. You could build up a different lower now and be able to have fun with the rifle, while keeping your eyes open for the lower you want. AR's are the Snap-Tites of the gun world, it's pretty easy to change parts.

I have located a old m16 lower from a military surplus
That would be a full-auto capable lower, and illegal as heck!

It had to be stolen from the military, as none were ever released as surplus.

And it would have to be registered with the ATF as a machinegun, with resulting $200 tax stamp.

But you can't do that either, because if it wasn't registered pre-1986, you can't register it now.

No.
As I said in post #5, military Colt M-16's have always used what has become the "standard" pin hole spacing and pin size all AR-15 manufacturs are using today.

Colt commercial AR-15's of that time period were made with a different pin location & pin size so they could not easily be converted to use full auto M16 parts, or other GI parts like M-16 uppers.
