Every site i go to is out of stock for military surplus ammo unless i want to order hundreds of rounds at a time. I did find a site called Southern Ohio Guns that offers the ammo for 3.99/15rds but they do not generate shipping costs. I don't want to comit to buy this ammo and then get charged an outrageous amount to ship it to me. I can try to figure out how much it is going to cost to ship the ammo to me through the UPS website if i knew how much a 15 round box of 8mm ammo weighed. What does everyone think? Do you think 5 boxes of 15 rounds would be about 5lbs. or closer to 10lbs.?

If your going to buy it buy it in bulk. I asked SOG the same question a week or two ago and it was $17 to ship 5 boxes but only $19 to ship 15 boxes. I just weighed one of the 15 round boxes and it weighs 15 ounces. You can email them asking about shipping as well. Their customer service was great when I ordered from them.

More people have discovered the value and fun of milsurps, the next "NEW" thing to get into.
Of course we know that takes away the value, now its the new market to run up the prices on the milsurps and everything that goes with them. Its called supply and demand.
The good deals on ammo are pretty much gone, which makes it harder to find certain calibers within the market. When you find what you want, buy as much as you can afford----------and then some extra!!!. The moment you don't, you'll wish later that you did.
Of course, another shameless plug to encourage reload, reload reload!!!!!!!

Thank you for the help...to the ones who tried to help. To the others, who just reminded me why i frequent other forums, i did google 8mm mauser ammo, 8mm ammo, 7.92x57mm ammo, military surplus ammo, and a couple of other word combinations. I also called SOG and am waiting on a callback.

Waiting for a call back? Rats, I thought you get a real person right away. I hate these companies that think all their other business is more important than their customers.

What a crock.

I don't know...i just called again and the lady said that someone does answer all calls during normal hours. She doesn't even know how i got to an answering machine! I don't know?!?!? Anyways, i just made an order with SOG and the customer service was great. $3.99 for a box of 15 Yugo surplus on stripper clips from the 50's. I thought this was an awesome price for the ammo. Wish payday wasn't at the end of the month or i would have ordered more than the 6 boxes i did order. You can bet they will be getting my business again come next month though. Also, if you call them, they can plug in what you want to order and let you know how much it is going to cost to ship it to you. 16 dollars for my 6 boxes. Kinda steep, but with the cheap price of the ammo, i can live with it.

I haven't seen much of the 50's surplus for sale in a while. All the Yugo made stuff is corrosive berdan primed and not reloadable, just FYI so you need an extra cleaning step.

I found my last 'big load' at a gun show on a small table.

I have had a couple misfires with the 50's Yugo, but no split cases or blown primers in hundreds of rounds.

I doubt you'll beat the SOG price.. I haven't seen it that cheap in a long while.

I believe there have been some issues with 1950s Yugo 8mm (blown primers/split cases). Try Googling it if you're interested.

Also, not trying to be condescending, but its probably cheaper to make one large purchase rather than many small ones. Even better if you can find it at those prices locally.

You have to remember that when shipping ammo, the shipping is going to get a bit more expensive because of the requirements that UPS & FedEx place on ammo shipments that increase the cost to the shipper significantly.

$16.00 is not out of line at all for an ammunition shipment.

 To what additional requirements are you alluding?

I used to periodically sell ammo online and the only additional requirement of UPS was adding an ORM-D sticker to the package ... and they would come to my house to pick it up.

1: ORM-D marking
2: Adult Signature Requirement
3: Packaging requirements (packed in a fashion that prevents tip to primer contact)

It's all in the UPS and FedEx Charter (Terms and Conditions) published on their respective websites. Granted it's all in legal mumbo-jumbo, but it's what their lawyers will be bringing up in a Civil or Criminal case resulting after an incident involving an ammunition shipment.

Anyone who chooses to ship ammunition really ought to know the requirements before slapping a label on the box and handing it to the carrier.

Ab-so-lute-ly.

From the UPS Service Terms & Conditions:

–Small arms ammunition, as defined in
49 C.F.R. § 173.59, will be transported only
when packaged and labeled in compliance
with 49 C.F.R. § 172 (Hazardous
Materials). Ammunition may not be
shipped in the same package as a firearm.

I perused the related section in 49 C.F.R. § 172 and only saw the ORM-D labeling mentioned.

So, apparently, nothing has changed since I spoke with a UPS TechRep on the subject ~5-6 years ago and found that ...

... the only additional requirement for me to ship ammo via UPS is the ORM-D labeling.

The UPS Tariff specifically states what you copied and pasted in your post.

49 C.F.R 172 outlines the identification, labeling, packaging and shipping requirements for the shipment of small arms ammunition. It also outlines the penalties and fines for violations. It is an intensive read requiring a lot of effort to pull out all the relevant details.

When I ship ammunition, it is in full accordance with the UPS Tariff and C.F.R. 172 and I have had no problems or issues.

Don
