7.92 Mauser ammo suggestions

Unfortunately this past weekend I spend my cash I had intended for reloading on another Mauser.... An m24/47 from samco with a bent bolt handle from an m48 and a k98 front band and strange stock with a second cross bolt installed....it's a strange beast but I love it, if anyone is interested I can post some pictures of it. It does seem to have a weak extraction problem and feed issues so far during my testing.

PICTURES! what are you talking about, no one likes pictures. We prefer that you just describe it in detail and let us imagine what it looks like.;) Just kidding.

I will get some pictures to you gents today as the outdoor lighting gets better.

Someone (samco or Yugoslavian factory workers) modified some vz24 parts to make this 24/47 work. It's kind of neat with all its non matching parts but for the 179$ I paid for this it's going to make a slick shooter.

Any confirmation on that k98 extractor being interchangeable with yugo intermediates? I have read about being able to "reshape" the claw...I'll get some pictures out of the extractor as well compared to my other Mauser.

Here are the photos as promised!

Note the second cross bolt near the grip of the stock, kind of interesting and I don't see any crack that they were trying to stop with it's installation and it is certainly well done. It's not in the correct spot to be a yugoslav type II carbine nor a vz24 rear swivel so I am kind of stumped on it.

Does anyone have any idea where that trigger guard could have been sourced from? It has no capture screw holes and at the forward end of the 'box"/magazine part it is open as opposed to being closed and one solid unit as on all other Mausers I have seen.

This rifle has a like new bore besides a few light pits and is the tightest of the ones I own.

Gunny, I checked out the ejector and even threw on a whole new ejector box but the issue persists.

I put in my 24/47 straight bolt and it extracted/ejected with force and with reliability yet the bent bolt in my other 24/47 produced the same issue so I have narrowed it down to the angle of my extractor or the extractor itself being worn.

It will pull a dummy cartridge from the chamber then just fall back into the chamber after ejection or prior to ejection.

You rifle is a Yugo 24/47 that was rebuilt at some time, not sure who. The rear cross bolt was added to keep or stop the stock from cracking.

Take the ejector box apart. There’s most likely some crud in it.

Headspace checked out okay on a go/no go gauge. Actually it is quite tight compared to my other 24/47.

I completely disassembled the ejector box and soaked in solvent and diesel and even tried a new ejector box and the problem persists.

I am guessing that the extractor is not quite up to snuff. I will probably buy one of the bay for a k98 assuming they are interchangeable parts. I know it's a mutt but damn this one appeals to me for some reason.

Also if anyone wants a cheap project gun these are 179 at centerfire systems I think after shipping it was 189.99.

These are my extractor compared to each other. One appears to have more "grab" area than the other and may explain the trouble with extraction. I suspect it may be worn out.

My compulsive nature got the best of me...

So far I eliminated 80% of my extraction issues by ever so slightly reshaping the extractor claw and with a fresh bevel.

Now the interesting stuff....

Turns out the trigger guard that I mentioned before and seen in the photos is shorter than a regular trigger guard!!! So upon close inspection of the feeding issues I could see the nose of the projectile was getting caught under the feed ramp on the receiver.

Since the mag well had been opened up it provided no room for the 7.92x57 at all and all it could do is get caught up.

I have a spare m48a trigger guard and floorplate so I took some measurements to compare....

The well that was on the trigger guard which came with the rifle measured 3.5mm shorter than the m48a one and roughly 1.5mm narrower. The old follower measured a whole 5.5mm shorter than a regular (98/vz24) follower!

So long story short the m48a assembly will be on there for the time being....at least it will cycle finally. I suspect the old trigger guard was perhaps swedish (6.5mm)? Or from a similar sized action.
