A 2" thick, round stock 50 caliber barrel, 1 in 22 or 1 in 24 inch twist? I want a to mill the flats myself. Green Mountain has only a 1.4" round stock 50 cal that is 1 in 24. Is there anyone who makes a fatter one?

In all my travels I have never come across round barrel blanks larger than 1.375.

In 1989 or 1990 there was a guy set up at the eastern in a large olive army tent that had truck loads of locks and barrel blanks etc. I purchased some dozen or so barrel blanks and several locks from the guy, as well as a cannon barrel. My truck listed to one side from all the weight. I am building a gun now from one of the barrel blanks. 69 caliber one in 72 twist and 42 inches long 1.375 inch round. figure it ought to be quite a thumper Might take up chunk gunnin

4v50Gary,just a thought,an outer sleeve could possibly bring a barrel up to those dimensions. In Ned Roberts Book "The Muzzle Loading Caplock Rifle" some of the Rifles are of extreme weight, many where used as Sniper Rifles during your Civil War.A barrel could be turned down to fit a suitable piece of heavy duty Tube. Two Part Epoxy would hold it absolutely secure.

You might also check with Steve Garbe, he may know where to get a barrel that size, that's about the size those guys are using with those 40 lb slug guns.

I had a CF .338 barrel made by Lilja that was 2 inches in diameter and 44 inches long. I know he makes standard Cf .50 cal barrels, but the twist is likely faster andthe grooves are likely shallower. I would imagine any CF barrel maker that does cut rifling could build you one with square bottom rifling and the depth of the grooves you want.

I think that milling the outside of a finished barrel is going to produce accuracy problems in that barrel due to the unballanced release of the tensions of the steel. Starting with a hex and then drilling and rifling the barrel is a better strategy in my opinion.

Hi Steel Horse Rider - Thanks for the suggestion. I need to do it for a school project. Just used a fly cutter on a milling machine the other day. Talk about sweet.

BTW, hope you're OK up there in Longmont. I hear there's heavy rains affecting the place.
