Ok.... Just figured I'd share this for the laughs.

Went to Walmart, got a haircut, got the dog a new engraved tag, headed over to sporting goods to buy a couple boxes of WWB .40SW 180 grain FMJ.

Asked the sporting goods manager at the counter for Winchester USA 180 grain .40 Smith and Wesson. He looked at the boxes. He asks, "You want .45?". I reply, "No, above it, the .40S&W." He points at the boxes entirely confused (I'm thinking - learn to read!!!). So I give verbal directions for his hand to follow. "Up... ok, now over 2 boxes to the left...... no, that's 4 boxes, you went past it. Go back...." etc.

We get to the .40SW. I can't see what they in the small print say because the counter is a good 10 feet from the case. I tell him I want the ones in 180 grain. He takes a box and hands it to me. It was 165 grain. "No, you see here where it says 165 grains? I need the one that says 180 grains FMJ"

He takes the box back and says (without even looking), "There is no such thing as a 180 grain full metal jacket. All 180 grain bullets are hollow-point."

I was trying to avoid laughing as hard as I wanted to, because frankly I had a full bladder and was worried I might have an accident.

So I eventually just told him to give me one of the "Yellow Remington boxes that says .40SW" - which I knew from the past was 180 grain FMJ. I was hoping to get WWB, but oh well.

There's no moral to this story. Although I am worried about the literacy rate in this country.

Look at it this way. This is GOOD news.

If you find people who are just barely qualified, working for Wal-Mart, then the job market must still be pretty good for employees.

When you find people who are clearly overqualified, then there's something to worry about.

quite funny. At least you can go to wallmart to get ammo...

In our "wallmart style" shopping point, you cannot even find a picture of a gun.. they would judge it not enough "politically correct" ... crazy words.. people are sheeps/lambs..

next time take binoculars. it will help. i think that every sporting good counter in every walmart across the country enacts this particular drama twice daily at least.

Be glad your walmart still has guns and ammo mine quit selling guns:fire: but fortunetly still carrys ammo....for now:(

You will be amazed at some of the morons walmart will hire at my area.

That seems to be the norm here in the last 2-3 years rather than the exception. It seems that there are less and less competent people in general. I am usually shocked if someone actually shows up or does a job correctlly.

my two local wal-marts have keyholders who hunt, so I never had this problem save for once, when the only lady in the building with the keys seemed afraid of guns.

To my knowledge, there are only 2 Walmart stores within 50 miles that still carry guns, and both only have a small selection (1 small rotating rifle case I believe).

About 75% of the stores around here still have some ammo, how much varies from store to store. Some have very little. One store I know of only has .22lr.

As for the people at the counter, in general - this experience was only a little more ridiculous than usual. There was one guy at the store way down in Florida City that knew his stuff though. That was a few years ago. I'd imagine he's gone.

Generally I get people who don't anything about what they're selling, but at least can read the boxes.

A few months ago I talked with a Wallyworld manager about the lack of employees to man the cash registers and wait on customers. He told me they would love to hire more people, but couldnt find any that could pass the drug test! Pretty sad.

If he spoke english you are one up on the Walmarts closest to me. I have two within 5 miles but the closests ammo seller is 25.

You want to hear something really stupid and related?

At a Walmart near me they charge you $1 every time they unlock the case. If he picks up the wrong ammo, locks the case and walks over to you, and then goes back to get the right ammo, they charge you $2.

I saw them charge one guy $3 to unlock and relock the cases. He wanted some other ammo in addition to what he already had and they charged him again because they unlocked it.

He never realized and I pointed out the $1 extra charges on the reciept.

They got a real scam going there.

IBJCT (In before Justin closes this)

Be grateful you actually found someone to get the ammo for you. All too often I have to wait 15 minutes for people. And I NEVER say what I want in technical terms. Always, "the ones on the bottom shelf in the tall white box on the left side that say 45 auto and Winchester."

And don't be shy to ask for "All of them." That always gets weird looks from customers and sales folks.

Cheese, haven't you herd that they hire the handicapped at Wal Mart!

I was in a local Wal Mart just the other day and went to the sporting goods department to get a fishing license. Guy behind the counter says oh uh I don't know how to fill one out. I ask him how long he's been working in sporting goods, he says a little over a year. I ask if theres any one else that can do a license. He calls for a manger. Manger sh-owes up ten minutes later and says she doesn't know how to do a license either.

Wait, are you guys suggesting that that people working for a discount retailer for low wages and crappy benefits (if any) don't particularly care enough about the job do any more than the bare minimum? That you might get less than stellar service and expertise regarding ammo from a store that sells ammo, paint, air filters, scrapbooks, action figures, and goldfish within a 15 meter radius?

Do you guys complain that the $.99 cheeseburgers from the value menu aren't made with USDA Prime Angus beef or fine aged cheddar as well?
