Where do you all go to plink?

I live in the city and have been going to ranges to do my shooting. I want to go somewhere to plink at soda cans, milk jugs, etc, etc. Is this possible, or do I need to know someone with some rural land?

Most clubs I belong to state that you can only shoot at paper targets. For the most part this is to maintain a clean range area. I find that it's a loose rule and as long as you clean up what you shoot at, there isn't to much of a problem. I live outside of the Boston area in what you'd call suberbia. There are a few nice outdoor ranges that are around this area.

Most of the "in city" ranges are indoors and the RO will only let you shoot at paper. This is fine for the occasional session, but being outdoors and having the ability to shoot at other reactive targets is much more fun.

My advise would be to visit a few outdoor clubs if you have any around you. Even if it's a little bit of a drive. The exerience is a lot better.

let me clarify a little...are there areas (not ranges) of rural land where one can go to shoot a firearm? Just some woods somewhere where I can plink and have it all to myself.

Dunno if they have BLM land in Massachusetts, but you might want to check the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) website. Most BLM land is open to target shooting.

Guncraft, an indoor range off I-40 in Knoxville. I haven't gotten around to finding the local outdoor ranges or anything else.

My grandmother has some land off the beaten path, I was taken there to learn how to shoot as a child. Unfortunately, thanks to feral dogs and other pests, the nasty critter factor is off the chart in the area. If you're unfortunate enough to find a really bad spot, the fleas will climb your legs like a black cloud :uhoh: :what: :barf:

One of these days I'll bathe in DEET and go for a canine plink session.... they really give the cattle farmers a bad time running stock.

I just take a leisurely stroll thru the woods. We have plenty of state and timber company lands to wander around.

f4igrad,

The closest place around here is probably the Oak Ridge Sportsmen's Association. It's a members-only range in Oak Ridge, but they do have a dedicated plinking range (no centerfire rifle).

I don't know if the John Sevier range has a plinking area. It's up on Rifle Range road, just north of Knoxville.

Otherwise, the closest area would be the forest lands down around Chattanooga. Actually, it's a Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Look at this link www.state.tn.us/twra/firrange.html under region IV.

edit:

I just read that there is a range at the Royal Blue WMA which is north of Knoxville about 30 minutes.

Some clubs allow it. Mostly plastic jugs, baloons etc. Nothing that can shatter.

I can shoot .22 on my property. Anything else and the police told me they might get a call and have to ask me to stop. Technically I'm not supposed to shoot where I live.

I usually make a day of it and drive out to Jawbone Canyon in the Mojave.

In addition to going to the range, I most often just run down by the river and shoot a few hundred rounds. Every time I go down there is bothers me to see that some idiots have been dumping old appliances and mattresses, etc. there because they are too lazy to dispose of them properly. This is federal land and I’ve been going down there shooting for the past 20 years, you can easily tell everybody and their brother go shooting down there too… what will end up happening is that one day the feds will get enough of the mess from people dumping trash and will block it off.

Then I went out of town to visit a friend and we went to his plinking area in the woods… people have been dumping there too. Have noticed some pictures of people our shooting their arms on different forums, seems almost every time you see a picture of someone on the forum having a great time spending an afternoon plinking… you see trash dumped in the background.

This is one of the things that is making it harder to find fun plinking areas… everywhere you go there is some bonehead that is able to justify in his mind why it’s ok to dump their trash in the woods or by the river. Ruins it for everyone, not to mention it is a horrendous sight to look at when you go out of the city to relax…

Plinking balloons out on the ocean is terrific, if you can get a boat to go offsure in. Once you have a clear horizon in 360*, you have no worries. Your bullets and your sound won't travel as far as you can see. Plus, your misses make nice visible splashes, so you can adjust fire. I like to have balloons tossed over, where they stick to the water, as I travel along. The balloons get smaller as you travel away, so you have to shoot pretty well or they "get away" from you. And of course, you can see your hits even out several 100s of yards, because the balloons disappear.

Usually my back yard..but I think it's soon to be a thing of the past...the lady next to us(through the woods)sold some land between her house and ours, and the jackass who bought it is going to put a house right in between ours and hers.Right in the path of my back yard range.....bummer.I'll probably still shoot directly off my back stoop, but just to test fire and such.Maybe the guy who rents it,or buys it will be a shooter. But most likely he'll be some Michael Moore dufus.....need to find a new place to plink I guess..

My back yard. Had a local farmer dig a pond for me ($250) and had him pile the dirt high.

National Forests are a pretty good bet. Check with the Forest Service before going, though.

At the outdoor range I am a member of, there are two "practice" ranges where you can shoot just about anything (excluding glass and things that create shards) as long as you clean up after yourself.

Have a 300 yd range on my farm!

Our farm is fifty acres snuggled up against the base of some of the coast range mountains here in northwest Oregon. The backstop is a foothill about 100' high and a mile or so wide. Great place for us and for our neighbors to shoot. Good shooting;)

The problem in Clark County is that they made shooting in the desert illegal, so you just can't pick a spot and shoot anymore (unless you take the chance of getting busted). There's BLM land a ways north of Vegas and the Sloan area south of town where shooting is legal, other than that you have to go to a range. I go to Desert Sportsman's R&P Club out by Red Rock to shoot.

My deck. I do a lot of shooting in the National Forest that borders my property. Hundreds of great locations within a few minutes of home. Right now we are under stage 3 fire alert because of the drought and many areas are shut down.

Off the front porch

Or out the back door, or down in the creek, or back in the woods, or down in the front woods, or etc.:D

Shooting at home

All I have to do is open a door or a window.

If Iget really ambitious, I'll go outside.

There's nothing out there to hit but trees and/or trespassers
