Where do you keep your bedside home defense weapon?

My Sigma .40 is locked in a safe with lighted push-buttons, along with tactical flashlight, and spare mag. The small safe is then anchored to the 70's style console TV next to the bed. (They won't carry THAT safe downstairs and outta the house when I'm at work!) My last teenager is still @ home, and gun-savvy. His fridge-raiding pals don't know between Airsoft and real, hence the safe. Pistol-grip 18" 12ga pump resides in the closet, locked & loaded with HD shells, 00 buck, then 3" magnum 00-buck for last.

It's just me and the mrs. so it stays easy to get to, usually on the floor right beside the bed, or on the nightstand. If we have company I go through and put everything away (which can be a bit of a chore). I'm usually not too far from a weapon here because meth is a serious problem in our area and we have had more than our share of methnecks coming up our driveway in the middle of the night.... Nothing says get out of here like a laser though, but you gotta be careful with that, it's technically illegal here to point a gun at someone unless they too have a gun. You are not allowed to use a weapon greater than you are being attacked with.... I doubt any jury in the world would send a person away for shooting someone who was coming in their home with an axe, but the possibility is there. North Carolina needs some new gun laws!

All three handguns are in a number-punch safe on a shelf (eye-level) in my bedroom closet... 10 feet from my side of the bed. All are chambered. Along with flashlights and a IIIa ballistic vest.
I live in a big house in a rural setting. I have a greater worry of my son getting to them than I do the threat of a bad guy. I am prepared, but do not sacrific safety.

Years ago I lived in some bad neighborhoods. I use to leave a M1911A1 on top of my nightstand... until I remembered that I am such a deep sleeper that the intruder will find it before I wake up :uhoh:
(I was in the invasion of Iraq and can literally sleep through all hell breaking loose)

A small safe at my bedside that has my handgun two 17 rd mags, one 5 rd box of 00 buck, flashlight and a pistol belt with a holster.

Under the bed. I sleep on the edge, so if I had to, I could just grab it while I get up. Although I am positive it wouldn't be as smooth if I were sleepy. It's an 870.

XD 45 loaded with 14 Gold Dot 230's fitted with 200 lumen TLR-1 light in my nightstand.
S&W M&P 9c loaded with 13 Gold Dot 124+p's in my wife's nightstand.
Two big dogs sleeping on the bottom of the bed.

Well I guess my approach is just different enough to bear mentioning. My Glock 30 with Crimson Trace laser sight stands vertically in the near corner of the second drawer of my night stand. It stands such that the gun's grip extends just out over the edge of the drawer frame. I have a KRISS extra mag that holds, I believe, about 27 rounds.

I live alone.

I'll add a note about a recent creation: I took the base of a container in which was sold a stack of compact discs. I cut off the plastic bar that extends up vertically (through the holes in the stack of discs) and ran a 1/4" bolt up through the hole it left. I put rubber washers and nuts on it to hold the bolt secure in place. I then placed a strip of Velcro around the bolt. I can place the gun vertically, muzzle-down, on the contraption and it leaves my gun standing upright ready for my access.

Well Kraut, here are my observations since doing this:

  • The lack of weight at the base can cause a heavier pistol to topple over. A small 2 1/2 pound barbell weight bought from goodwill would function better.
  • The diameter of the bolt & wrap means it's not functional on 9mm and marginally functional on 40 cal. because the barrel occasionally hangs on to the contraption. A better option might be some ultra-thick electrical tape for padding in stead of the velcro.

Im thinkin' epoxy a 1/4" wooden dowel in the center of that 2 1/2 # weight. Slide a rubber grommet or washer over the dowel and snug it down to the bottom to cushion the muzzle. Should work for a number of different guns.:what:

Theoretically, I could see how the rubber-like exterior of electrical tape may hang up a little inside the barrel on a frantic draw--unlike either side of a velcro.

This could cause the weight to be lifted just enough to yank the gun back as it falls and burn valuable time if not pulling the gun out of hand when seconds count.

Just an objective observation.

The rifle is leaned right up against my dresser, less than two feetfrom my bed. I can grab it and work the charging handle without leaving the comfort of my matress.

I guess I am swimming against the current, but other than highway Motels, I don't keep a handgun within arms reach of the bed. Access takes a step or two.

Pistols that are kept 'gassed up and ready to go' at home are revolvers or DAO/Striker fired semi autos. As much as SA autos are fun to shoot, they wouldn't be my first choice for fighting from the sheets.

Time was, I'd hit the floor frisky as a squirrel, all cylinders firing and the the oil warm. Not so these days. The cobwebs don't immediately disappear when my eyes open.

I think it was an Eastwood character who said something to the effect, that 'a man gotta know his limitations'. I have several.

HD gun(beretta 92) on the nightstand(not in the drawer) and my sub2k leaning against it.

Shotgun in the closet(retreat point).

OH! I read the question wrong.

I keep 'that' on the floor beside my bed snoring a stink of canned horse meat and random unlucky critters from the yard through its sharp and jagged jaws that close like a bear trap on table scraps and the random over-extended finger.

It's always loaded and never goes off accidentally.

Negligently? Debatable.
