Where have Stainless Steel Guns Gone?

There are a good number of stainless guns that are dark coated, so glancing at the gun case can be misleading.

I was always curious why there weren’t more stainless hunting shotguns for waterfowl.

Incidentally, I have, as I type this, two stainless revolvers on my person. One is a Charter Arms Undercover (circa 1985, but they do make a newer version) and a NAA Mini .22LR revolver.

Well, I hope ChanceMcCall, the OP, learned his lesson about asking a question on an ‘informational’ forum like The High Road. Why if he, and all the rest of us, would just learn how to properly use something called a “Search Engine” and spend plenty of time scourng EVERY manufacturer’s website, there would be no need to use internet bandwidth on something as silly as a forum like The High Road.

I agree about the use of search engines. In most cases though, like this one, it doesn't take a lot of searching or "scouring" manufacturers websites. Just a simple, brief search of terms like "stainless steel handguns" or "stainless steel rifles".

My point was this: Is there ANY question on here, that hasn't been asked in some way, some how, at some time? Even if one were to do a thorough Search of this forum or a manufacturer's website or a Google :barf: search, another person's perspective will most certainly be helpful. The OP was excoriated for asking why some of us might think that manufacturers offered less (he didn't say no) stainless steel guns than in the past.

chicharrones was the 1st to respond with this "...Overall, it seems cerakote/marinecote finished steel guns are cheaper to buy and less shiny than stainless guns..." No Search engine (nor myself) would have come up with this response. The OP was all but called an idiot for simply asking the question; many responses were certainly not very High Road.

I was fully aware that your earlier response was intended to be sarcastic. I'll leave it up to others to decide whether sarcasm is "high road", (whatever that means). It seems like "excoriated" might be a bit too strong of a word. The OP stated that "most stainless steel guns seem to have disappeared". Several of us simply pointed out that that assumption was not accurate and I pointed out that that question could have been answered extremely easily and quickly with a simple web search. Those are facts, not any particular person's opinion.

One caveat - "coatings" can wear off. "Stainless" is not a "coating". Finis.

Amen. If you use them a lot, especially handguns in holsters the coating does not last. I practice drawing daily and my poor SA XDs has almost no finish left on the front of the slide. All that said, coating are an improvement over blue steel in preventing rust on the surface, but not a substitute for 100% stainless steel.

Yes, I do appreciate the beauty of deep bluing and wood and get passionate about gold filled engraving on these blued guns. I just don't ever carry or shoot them if there is a stainless alternative. I shoot Trap with a wood and blue steel gun because there is no alternative, just as I bird hunt the same way. I have to explain that I have seriously considered having my hunting shotguns Armoloyed because stainless steel shotguns are not readily available.

I live in a dry climate here in the SW, so stainless guns aren't of much interest to me.
