Im in the market for a new higher quality AK 47 and i think the SSR-85C would suit me perfectly. so far the best price ive seen is about $550 from Peach State Guns http://shop.peachstateguns.com/product.sc?categoryId=70&productId=335 Is there a better Dealer to go with? Is there a better deal out there im not seeing? Is Peach State Guns reputable? Help me find the AK of my dreams. thanks all.

Do you want it for looks or function?

They are very nice looking, nicely finished guns (except bolt and carrier could be better polished) but are otherwise not super special. For function, I would consider a Saiga conversion instead (DIY or purchased). You can buy a Saiga and convert it yourself for roughly $500, or buy one already converted (though not as nicely) for about $550.

If you do get a SSR-85C, the wood furniture is very nice; it's US made by Ironwood Industries and is far nicer than typical AK wood stocks. Be aware that the finish on the wood is very basic (tung oil per TGI, and only one coat done quickly per my eyeballs) and you would probably want to do some further finishing on it.

Also, I have it straight from the horse's mouth (TGI, the importer/compliance modifier) that some SSR-85C's have US Tapco trigger parts and some have original Bulgarian parts. If you get one with original Bulgarian parts, you can only legally use US-made magazines, unless you want to install US-made parts yourself (a fairly easy job and about $30-40 worth of parts). Caveat emptor.

Well i would like to have a nicer looking well functioning AK,so both i guess hah. check out the link in my first post. its a SSR-85C with K-VAR Furniture and K-VAR Fire Control Parts so i think i could use foreign mags. also there is no wood which is fine with me. i like the clean black look. But from what i understand the Bulgarian kits are way better made and under tighter tolerances then the WASR-10's. i dont really want my mags to flop around in the rifle like fish heh. im still wondering if Peach State Guns does good business or if there is a better deal on a SSR-85C that im not seeing...? It sounds like that gun would have enough US-made parts to legally use foreign made mags. I would confirm that with the seller before you buy though.

I do think these SSR-85C's are nicer than the WASR's in terms of looks, fit and finish. But they function about the same. And the SSR-85's apparently have used or potentially used parts, while WASR's and Saigas are all new parts. Having said that, the two SSR-85C's I've looked at had parts that all looked brand new.

FYI on this statement:

They are made with a stamped receiver, but milled parts adding heft and balance. They feature a K-Var black polymer stock set and K-Var fire control parts, which offer a smoother more consistent trigger pull.

1) I think the milled parts is a disguised reference to the fact that these apparently use internal parts intended for milled receivers, rather than the stamped receivers they have. I don't think this creates any problem, but I see no way in which this is a benefit. The SSR-85C's have standard 1.0mm stamped receivers and are no heavier or more solid than most other stamped AKs.

2) I would confirm that those K-VAR FCG parts are US made and not Bulgarian made. Also, FYI, I've sampled SSR-85's with Bulgarian FCG parts and their trigger pull is great, bordering on too light.

I have no experience with Peach State Guns. If you're shopping around, I'd suggest you contact Blaine at Atlantic Firearms and see if he has the same gun and would like to price match. I've dealt with him (and Atlantic, which I think he owns) a couple times and the service has been terrific.

I would still consider a converted Saiga as an option. Won't look the same, but I like the look. You can DIY or you can buy preconverted, such as the ones converted by TGI (same company that imports the SSR-85C's) and sold by many companies including Atlantic and Classic Arms.

from looking at Atlantic's website it seems that they have the same gun for about $50 more. i have heard good things about Atlantic so i think i will take your advice and see if i can track down Blaine for a possible price match. "trigger pull is great, bordering on too light" i would love to have great trigger pull out of the box, sounds awesome. thanks for the reply Z-Michigan.
