i reside in southern California, not even sure if buying ammo online here is legal or not. if it is, whats a good sight to order from? i'm mostly interested in 45auto and shotshells. people with experience buying online only please:).

go ahead, make my day! -Dirty Harry

I regularly have ammo delivered to San Francisco from:

natchezss
ammunitiontogo
ableammo

They all have reasonably useful websites and don't require you to provide ID before you buy.

In addition to the 3 JJE listed, I regularly look at these sites:

http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/index.html
http://www.ammoman.com/webstore_home.htm
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com
http://www.ammunitionstore.com
http://www.jgsales.com/index.php
http://www.midwayusa.com
http://www.grafs.com/index.php

Shop all sites for the best price, and make sure you check the shipping rates as well. This can make a huge difference in the total cost. Some sites will charge as much as $30-$50 shipping for a bulk order, while others advertise "freight paid" prices (ammoman doesn't charge for shipping).

I usually do better buying practice ammo at WallyWorld, but for SD ammo I've had a lot of luck/better prices at Ammunition To Go. Inventory varies from day to day, so you have to check back often (for 9mm etc). The less used calibers (45, 357 SIG etc) they often seem to have on hand.

If you can get a few buds together to share shipping costs, prices ain't that bad (prices being a relative thing these days).

FWIW, I often toss X number of boxes in the cart to see how it affects shipping-here's what I found last time (all 50-rd 9mm boxes):
TOTAL SHIPPING SHIPPING PER BOX
1 box $8.65 PPB $8.65
2 boxes $9.33 PPB $4.67
3 boxes $9.68 PPB $3.23
4 boxes $10.12 PPB $2.53
5 boxes $12.75 PPB $2.55
6 boxes $14.11 PPB $2.36
7 boxes $15.04 PPB $2.15
8 boxes $16.16 PPB $2.02
9 boxes $17.24 PPB $1.92
10 boxes $18.34 PPB $1.84

'Course, this might change slightly depending on the weight of the calibers you're shipping (although I don't think it makes a lot of difference)?

You might also check local police supply stores in your area? I can often get good prices from a couple of police supply stores in my area.

ammunitiontogo is my absolute favorite. Ive had nothing but great experiences with the 4 or 5 orders ive placed with them

grafs.com has been great as well so far in the 2 times i've dealt with them

centerfiresystems or jgsales too...havent had perfect transactions with them, but it hasnt been ammo related, but they fixed the problem with little hassle

aimsurplus i have dealt with several times and is probably my second favorite to deal with. but my first time ordering, i did order some wolf 9mm and got brown bear instead.

You might try Georgia Arms. Like many, many others I was having one heck of a time finding .45LC rounds. I use cowboy loads in an 1858 New Army Conversion. Georgia Arms delivers 100 rounds from Atlanta for $63.00. (Brand new ammo, of course) I can't tell you about other ammo prices, but check their website. For me, their price actually beat what I was paying for Winchester or Magtech at my local store...on the rare occasions they even had it!
