I have a ruger m77 in .270win that I'd like to be able to shoot recreationally without breaking the bank (I know a .308 probably would have been a better choice, but it was a Christmas present). The cheapest I've found ammo is Sellier & Bellot softpoints that Cabelas sells for $11.99 per box. Is there anywhere to get factory loads cheaper?

I realize most answers will probably say that I should take up reloading, but I'm fairly clueless about that too. With reloading, what would be the minimum price per round? How many rounds would I have to load to break even on the equipment?

thanks

Well, I don't know the cheapest price for factory ammo, but I handload for the .270, so I can help you a little bit there. Expect to handload quality .270 ammo for about $5 for 20 or less. I don't count the cost of brass since I had a bunch of .270 brass that was given to me. Also, I use sierra bullets, and you could probably buy cheaper bullets than that for practice.

Cabelas

Cabelas also has PMP for 9.99 a box. It is available in either 130gr SP or 150gr SP. It is south african made ammo and is pretty good quality. Reloadable brass case and shot the same as Remington Core-lok out of my CZ. Another option that you might want to check out is Wally World. They often run specials on ammo. They have a decent variety of .270 ammo and the prices are really good even when not on special.

good shooting,

thanks for the replies. SirPol, I don't know how I missed the PMP ammo, I've looked through the Cabelas shooting catalog at least a dozen times. I'll probably buy a few boxes of those to try... unless someone knows where to get anything cheaper ;)
