Folks, I need some help here. I'm trying to put together a collection of US issue rifles. So far, I have a Springfield 1873 Trapdoor, a Krag 1898 Infantry Rifle, a Springfield 1903, a Garand, an M1 carbine, and of course an AR15.

However, I'm battling to find a good-quality Enfield 1917. It seems that every one I locate has been "bubba-ized", or is in non-shootable condition, or something else. I don't want a perfect specimen: just a representative example of the breed, in good condition, as a shooter, not a wall-hanger.

Can anyone advise where these might be found, and a fair market price for one?

Many thanks.

I saw one, about a month ago, at Larry's Pistol and Pawn in Huntsville, AL. Their asking price was around $450. It was in okay condition; shooter grade. It may still be there.

Preacherman:

The For Sale board at www.jouster.com is one place you might look. I think I saw an Enfield there recently.

You might look at Gunsamerica also. I might have seen one there too.

Jim Supica's operation has some service rifles, although I don't remember an Enfield last time I wandered by. The address is www.armchairgunshow.com

Did you look through Shotgun News and The Gun List?

The Civilian Marksmanship Program had some Enfields. I don't know if they still do.

I hope you find a good one. I've often wished mine hadn't been bubbaized.

Try Brian Dick at BDL Ltd. . He's a very conservative grader on his firearms. He's well respected on the milsurpshooter forum. I purchased 2 Enfields (1 in the wrap and one shooter grade) and was very pleased with both. Give him a call or email.

There is one up here that has a $290 price tag on it. Metal is pristine. Stock has been sporterized. I have seen a few military stocks in the second hand barrel of a local smith for about $75. Boyds also has 1917 stocks, I believe. This gun looks like it has never been fired!
