Ok, so I'm considering switching out the DPMS .308 bolt in my Mega Maten with a JP Enhanced .308 Bolt. My barrel is a Fulton/Criterion chrome lined barrel. I do not trust that if I just switch out the bolt, that it will be safe to shoot. I want to have the headspace checked but I'd like the option of doing it myself rather than paying a gunsmith ~$50 for 10 minutes of work (and I'll probably have to wait 2 weeks to get my rifle back) simply because he has the tools and I don't. That being said, I really don't feel like disassembling my bolt to remove the ejector. I also have an M1A and I'd like the ability to check the headspace on it without disassembling the bolt which is a serious PITA. I hear the military has notched headspace gauges they use that don't require disassembly of the bolt, but for some unfathomable reason places like MidwayUSA or Brownells don't carry these and companies like Clymer and Forster for some reason don't think its worth making them.

I know http://www.billricca.com sometimes has the notched military gauges, but it seems they only have 5.56x45 and on top of that they've been out of stock for ages. I've heard Pacific Tool & Gauge will make you a custom gauge with an ejector notch, but I understand these are crazy expensive and not worth it compared to just having a gunsmith do it. I need BOTH a 5.56x45 and a 7.62x51 field gauge that are ejector-notched.

Anyone know anywhere else to get ejector notched field headspace gauges?

If I have to go the gunsmith route, I am located in Austin TX where there are very few gunsmiths and the few there are are overpriced and tend to cater to the Fudd crowd so I don't know if they would have any clue about my Mega Maten, so I'd really prefer a method of checking headspace in all my 5.56x45 and 7.62x51 rifles on my own without having to deal with the damn ejector.

Thanks in advance.

Emmmm???
No.

But a standard headspace gage and a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel could make one in my basement in about 5 minutes I betcha.

But taking the ejector out of an AR-10 bolt would take less then 1 minute.
The M1A, just a little longer maybe.

I'd go that way.

Just disassemble the bolts, it isn't that hard once you do it a couple of times. Or you could cut a chunk out of a normal headspace gauge. Pretty much your only options that I know of.
