Where to get tumbling meda?

I recently got a bag of Hartz corn cob small animal bedding litter at Walmart in the pet section. It cost less than $4 for a bag that weighed between 8 and 10 pounds; I don't remember exactly.

They clean fine, especially since I mixed some auto scratch remover in with them. This corn cob litter is ground pretty big. It works great for straight-walled cases. However, I just cleaned a batch of 30/06 brass, and the media packed very tightly into the cases and would not pour out. I had to use a small screwdriver in almost every case to loosen up the jammed media, then tap it out. Took a long time. I learned that I have to use media that is ground finer for bottle-necked cases.

So do what most of us suggest and go to drillspot and purchase 20/40 grit, its small enough it will not even clog up your flash holes. Its cost is similar to the stuff you bought at the pet store, plus you save your gas money as they ship it to your door with no added charges.

I have never tried the lizard litter, but reading the posts tells me I'll have to get some and give it a shot

As for the stuff from Drill Spot, I have been using it for 2 years from the advise of a poster in THR. I have been very satisfied with it. I paid just under $40.00, shipping included, for the bag which filled up 2 1/4 5 gallon pails, that I store it in. It seems to be as durable, if not a bit more, than the media such as Lyman and the others that I used to buy. As mentioned before, it rarely gets stuck in flash holes. It does get stuck to a point in the lapua flash holes more than I would like but for the price it's bearable.

The only gripe that I have with it is, it is quite staticy, making it a bit messy at times. I haven't had much luck curing that situation, even with the dryer sheets.

My 2 cents QM

@ Sigep:

The NuFinish uses a mineral spirits base to carry the polish and additives. It will dry out and by just adding a dollop of mineral spirits it rewets the media and it does a better job of cleaning. I find that it removes carbon much faster with mineral spirits. You don't need a lot, just enough the media looks moist but isn't really wet.

Evan, where did you get the info that NuFinish uses a minieral spirits base? You sure about that?

I just ran into the same thing. Had been using the same crushed walnut hulls I had bought from a pet store for years, but that media was getting REALLY dirty (to the point where the cases had a powder residue left on them when they came out). Got this corn cob stuff and had the same trouble - though mine was with 9mm cases. Seems that on about half of them just enough got stuck in the case that I had to pick it back out.

I'm wondering if the media will work against itself after a while and not get stuck, but I'm not sure I have the patience to wait and see - I'm going to try and find another bag of crushed walnut.

Nufinish does indeed have an odor- reduced mineral spirit base.

Check the MSDS.

On media that has been coated with nufinish, but isnt doing what it used to- an ounce of mineral spirits per load does the trick for helping to remove stubborn stuff.
