What big iniatives are brewing in the gun rights arena for this Congress? We got gun manufacturer protection last year, what is coming this year?

Possibilities:
-CCW full faith and credit law from Congress
-DC gun ban repeal
-2nd amendment case by SCOTUS (nothing on the radar yet)
-lawsuits against gun grabbers? NJ definitely, NOLA maybe.
-more CCW at state level, probably WI, probably NE, maybe KS, maybe MD?

Anyone have any ideas about how to get from here and now to something meaningful like 86 ban repeal or sporting purposes repeal?

Absolutely nothing, at best. As for repeal of the 86 machine gun ban and the sporting purposes clause, there is no way they will be repealed. Bush won't do it, and I have no doubt he will be the best president regarding the 2A that we will have in the forseeable future. (And that should not be misconstrued as a compliment).

So you think that antis are going to retake the house and senate in 06 and retake the presidency in 08? I'm not sure I buy that.

I can see them holding off on stuff during an election year, but by the same token I can see them doing stuff BECAUSE it's an election year. 04 brought us the OLC 2nd amendment paper and the AWB non-renewal. I dont see why 06 should be any different. Turnout for the off years is usually low, so I expect that gun owners will make a bigger than normal difference if they show up.

Next order of business should be to either repeal the 'sporting purposes' garbage or press for equal protection under the 14th amendment of the RKBA as an INDIVIDUAL right.

Ron Paul puts forth sporting purposes legislation every year and it always dies in committee. The NRA hasnt started pushing for this yet either, so I think they assume there isnt enough support for it on a grassroots level. If you know something different, please share.

Maybe not antis, but certainly statists will prevail. Bush is at best a statist on the gun issue.

Nobody in either party is going to make a big push to repeal anything.
