Lost somewhere in time!
Since I now have my guns in the same state as me, I would like to go to the range somewhere near Corpus Christi.

I live out on the island, and would prefer a range that has rifle and pistol. For now, want to function check my AR that I have not used and get it sighted in.

I have heard of the "Starry" Gun range off of Yorktown south of NOLF Waldron Field, and "Sharpshooter" off of Staples.

I can find contact info on Sharpshooter, but cannot for Starry. Does anyone know if you have to use store bought ammo at Sharpshooter (seems common at most store/ranges I am familiar with)?

If you know of a place to shoot in the area, please let me know.

From Padre Island north to Rockport, North/West to out by Sinton, and down by Kingsville. Just looking for within an hours drive or so.

If there are members-only ranges I MAY be interested in joining, as long as the price is reasonable and it is not a heinous drive from NAS Corpus Christi, where I am stationed now or NAS Kingsville, where I will be going in a few months.

When I lived in Corpus a number of years ago, I was a member (and Secretary for a few years) of the Corpus Christi Pistol & Rifle Club. Contact the good folks at Texas Gun Shop for current info on range if it is still active. It had pistol range, rifle range, and two skeet fields then. It was ONLY open to members but membership cost was very reasonable.

Good shooting and be safe.

I shot at the Sharpshooter about a year ago and they didn't require me to use their ammo.

If you're into long-range rifle shooting, Rifles Only down by Kingsville looks pretty nice. I've never been there, but have heard good reviews.

Report on the Sharpshooter

VERY nice place. Done almost like a hunting lodge, but not quite that big.

Plusses:
On site range, with reasonable rentals. Monday is "Military Monday" and I will be in to try out a GP100. Free rentals for Military (Active, Reserver, NG and Retired) on Monday.
CLEAN
Range is fairly well ventilated.

Minuses:
Very limited selection of cleaning supplies. Not much in the way of solvents other then CLP and GunScrubber. I am a #9 type of guy, so I had to go to wal-mart for that when I left.
For size store, seemed to have very little product on the shelf. They can order anything and get it in a couple days, but if they had a GP100 on hand, I may have walked out with it (after paying of course) today.

Other:
Prices are a tad high. 4" Blued GP100 was $580 OTD with tax. $579MSRP, $535 "best price" and taxes makes it $580 OTD..

There's an outdoor range off Yorktown, to the Flour Bluff side of Rodd Field Rd called Starry Shooting Range. As you drive towards FB on Yorktown you'll see a sign next to a caliche road on the right. If you get to the Mud Bridge you've gone too far. Bring repellent.

It's been a while since I've been out there, but it had a pistol range, a 100yd rifle range, and a skeet range.

Do you know what fees/rules/membership is out there?

I liked the range at Sharpshooters, but I prefer to be able to take my time and shoot EVERYTHING, instead of just bringing in one gun.

Do you know what fees/rules/membership is out there?

Like I said it's been a while, prolly a decade or so, but there were no membership fees at the time.

As for rules, well, I'm sure they have them written down. Somewhere. When you passed through the gate there was a small house on the right and the parking area was on the side of the house. You parked and somebody eventually wandered out to take your money and a vague wave towards the firing line was the extent of range instruction.

Also, take a look at the Texas State Rifle & Pistol Assn web aite at

http://www.tsra.com/?p=page&id=105

You're going to be there for a year or more; I'd strongly advise joining the state association. Thanks to my military service, I'm a life member of half a dozen state R&P organizations. There is no conflict with active military service and membership in state associatiosn. In fact, the state associations sponsor conpetitive shooting events aboard many military installations (Quantico, Camp Lejeune & Ft Bragg, Camp Pendleton, 29 Palms, Ft Lewis, etc).

Things might have changed..but we use to drive from Corpus up State 35 to Goose Island State Park north of Rockport. The city dump was adjacent to the park and the city would let you shoot all day.

It's a tad risky, but we still 4wheel down to Little Shell and Big Shell in the Winter (like right now) and blast away. No one for 10 - 15 miles in either direction. Do so at your own risk.

Other than that, you might get hold of someone with a ranch around Three Rivers or go south around Robstown...Lots of people will let you shoot down there for a few bucks. Private with no problems.

Tad risky is a bit of an understatement Beacoup, Big Shell and Little Shell on North Padre Island are part of the National Park system and the possession of a loaded firearm is a Federal offence.
