I live in San Diego and I love going to the range, but I'm looking to go have some fun shooting elsewhere. Does anyone know of a place I can go and shoot like in the desert or the mountains legally? I'd love to shoot something other than paper targets. I'm willing to travel up to 2 hours away from San Diego to do this. Anyone have any ideas? Keep in mind I want to do it legally

Check with the SD Sheriff's Dept. I used to shoot at McCain Valley and Carrizo Gorge. It might have changed since I moved.

I'm interested to know if it's OK to shoot in the desert or the mountains too, so long as it's not a national forest (which would be illegal to shoot in).

Jim, let your fingers do the walking.

i live in san deigo and i go out to jucumba (not sure if i spelled it right) i shoot out there all the time and i checked with local authorities and they said it was ok. just take 8 east out past all the casinos, it's about 30 shy of el centro, i think.

Why is it not legal to shoot in your local National Forest? I shoot and hunt in mine all the time. It is illegal to shoot or hunt in National Parks however. (eccept elk on Sta. Rosa Isl. @ C.I.N.P.)

Maybe it is national parks.

All I know is that the biggest chunk of unmolested land in my area is Angeles National Forest.

Check it out on this map, it's gigantic (the red star is me). There are shooting parks IN the Angeles National Forest, but it's illegal to shoot in the forest, outside those shooting parks.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'll look into this further and see what I find out. I know some places aren't allowing shooting due to the large fire risk we have out here.

Never thought of calling the Sheriff

WEPS, its spelled Jacumba, looks like its off of Old Hwy 80. Looks kind of close to the border too.
Looking at this site http://www.ca.blm.gov/elcentro/shooting.html , it looks like you can shoot just about anywhere in that general area as long as there isn't any regulation against it. But it also mentions part of Jacumba is closed due to fire danger.

I'll poke around some more and see if I can find any more information. Thanks for all the help.

Took me awhile to remember the name. We used to shoot just off La Posta Road. It's a few miles east of the BP checkpoint on I-8 in Pine Valley.
