I guy at my gun club has a pair of matching 1911's . One is a 45acp and the other is 9mm.
They are Smith and Wesson. I believe they are custom shop or pro series?
They are beauties

The only changes that I made to my Fusion GI are a wide spur hammer, full checkered cocobolo grips and a lanyard loop arched mainspring housing. Just because I wanted it to look a little more “GI”.

Plus I really like the feel of a wide spur hammer.

I would go with a Springfield or a Ruger, in that order.

The Range Officer is an excellent pistol. My father just bought a Ruger 1911 and he has been very pleased with his.

I like your "updates".

I prefer the arched main spring housing as well, I like the look and feel. When I was looking for some a decade or so ago they were not as many choices as flat main spring housings. It seems flat mainspring housings are more popular.

I've swapped out one or two on my M1911s and the M1911s I built from parts have arched main spring housings but I've left many with the flat main spring housing.

I have the Springfield RO Elite in the commander size. I've never been disappointed. Never a misfeed or FTF or any issue. I have shot my reloads from day 1. My other consideration was the Ruger. I felt for about $100ish more the Springfield gave me more. I'd like a Ruger, I have 6-7 other Rugers in other pistols and rifles.

Even though not one you mentioned that Colt Competition looks nice, and it's a Colt :)

I looked at the models you mentioned and they all look good. That being said, I really have a fundamental dislike for 9mm 1911s'. I like 1911s' however it seems that they all have to have something done to them to get them to work as a 9mm. It is a case of using something to do something it wasn't designed to do.

I recently gave some serious thought to going 9mm. The only 9mm 1911 platform that I found, that I liked, was the Springfield EMP. In its favor was that it was designed to be a 9mm, it wasn't just added as an afterthought.

I wouldn't want to be seen as speaking too ill of some peoples favorites, and on that list I think it is safe to say that each and everyone is someone's favorite. I just think you are better off using a pistol in the caliber it was designed for.

That is a long way of saying my vote is a Browning Hi Power or CZ-75 for full size SA 9mm and the EMP for Compact (again, this is assuming that what you want is a non-poly, SA 9mm [and yes, I know the CZ-75 isn't a SA; but it has a thumb safety, so you can use it that way if you want to]). Of the ones you listed, they are all pretty good.

I have a BHP and love it. Also 2 1911's in 45acp although one is a safe queen and the other has a colt 22lr conversion that permanently sits on it.

I want another steel, soft shooter like the BHP for just fun at the range. 1911, Beretta 92, CZ 75 were all platforms I considered. I settled on 1911.

I don't want to have to have "something done" to make it work though... As of now I'm torn between the Ruger Target 9mm and the Remington R1 Enhanced (haven't held the Rem yet but the price is much more appealing).

Seems like from what I've read and watched, guys have had hundreds of rounds through thier 1911 9mm's without a hiccup. If anyone knows anything different, I'd like to hear thier story.

This is probably the biggest cliché when it comes to discussing 1911s in a caliber other than .45. "It wasn't designed for that." They don't seem to remember the first change to the 1911 - the .38 Super that was developed back in the '20s.. not to mention any of the other calibers 1911s have been chambered in for years such as .38 WC, .22LR, and etc. Making one reliable in 9mm isn't exactly reinventing the wheel, and it's been done..for a while now.

I've had 9mm 1911s from RIA, Kimber, Dan Wesson, Baer, Springfield, and a couple of STI 1911/2011s that have all run perfectly right out of the box.

Between those two, I'd get the Ruger and not think twice about it. I see a lot of used Remington 1911s around, not many Rugers.

I'd still recommend the Springfield over both of them for under $1k. I'm a total 1911 snob and have been very impressed with the performance of the ones I have..they give my higher priced 1911s a run for their money...that said, I'm considering adding a Ruger 9mm Target to the collection, I was looking at the 10mm which is basically the same, and as I don't own any Ruger firearms I feel like I should. 1911s are an addiction... :)

My Ruger SR1911 9mm Commander works so well, I just can’t imagine criticizing whatever changes were made from the original .45 design. The ramped barrel is hardly worth mentioning. Such a solid piece.

They have pretty much solved the issue of 9MM being shorter than .45 ACP as far as feeding in a 1911 goes with better mags. I do agree the EMP is an awesome gun.

I forgot to mention the Desert Eagle 1911s from Israel, they make 9mm versions too at a reasonable price.
