I've been thinking about picking up a Savage 10/110 Trophy Hunter. I want a wood stock on this rifle. Any others I should look at? It will be my primary hunting gun. The savage would run about $650. My limit would be about $800.

+1, the second to last rifle I bought was a M70 in 270. I really like it, but then again I really like M70s in general.

I'd look into the T3 Hunter; they're very accurate, crisp, and well finished pieces.

Any .270 will do anything you want it to. Buy on price and whether or not you like the rifle. Commercial hunting rifles are all pretty much the same. Hard to beat a Savage for out of the box accuracy though.

I would look at weatherby or tikka. They both make gorgeous rifles that supposedly do pretty good. I don't know though as I have not had the fortune of really trying one out.

I'm also in the market for a 270 Win. And have the Weatherby and New Winchester at the top of my list. I keep reading that the New FN Winchesters are just awesome. The Sporter model with the 24" barrel seems to be hard to find. All the above mentioned rifles are great rifles and have a Tikka 3 Lite in .223 Rem. And it is more accurate than I am. Bolt is slick as glass. But not crazy about the plastic mag

I'd go with a Winchester M70.

An M70 Featherweight would be about perfect for a hunting rifle in Texas, and it's on the less expensive end of Winchester's M70 offerings - definitely within your budget.

I have a great 270 rifle, scope and loading accessories for sale in the classifieds. Hard to beat all the goodies at such a low price.

Best 270 win I ever shot was an old Browning BBR that belongs to a friend of mine, every bit as accurate as my Savage 270WSM, hard to find though I went looking for one just like it. Savage of course shoots good but expect it to be bullet picky all of mine are. For what it is worth my Savage shoots Ballistic Tips and SGKs very accurately and utterly fails with SSTs. Tikka would be another top choice, they are at their best with light-moderate kicking cartridges like the 270.

I just picked up a Tikka T3 Lite yesterday. It is a sweet shooting rifle for sure. Just messing around with factory loads I was very impressed by the accuracy and repeatable nature of the thin barrel.

An often overlooked rifle within the used market is Winchester model 670. They're very well built and typically quite accurate. Take a look at one at GunBroker.com

I need to go see what is around local. To shoulder them up and see how they feel. No one around here has the wood stock Savage but I've held the composite stock. The Savage 10/100 comes with a Nikon BDC scope.

The only .270 I have left in the stable is a Winchester M70 Extreme Weather with a Zeiss Conquest mounted in DNZ's. Has proven to be a very accurate and reliable rig. I have owned a few other 270's but this one is my favorite. Hard to go wrong with any of the rifles suggested. Going to boil down to how much you want to spend and what you like.

.270 is a great round and lot's of great choices available.

I have 2, either of which I'd strongly suggest-my Model 70 sporter is 1 of the most accurate rifles I own-I'm not going to win any competitions. but bone stock I've shot nickel and dime 3&5 shot groups at a 100 (I prefer the monte carlo stock of the sporter over the featherweight and there's next to zero difference in weight, but either are terrific).

Also have an X Bolt carbon fiber with the stainless/fluted barrel-1 of my favorite bolt action rifles for sure....the X Bolt's have some really cool extra features that I really like (short bolt throw, awesome magazine, among others).

I've also had really good success with my Model 700's and a savage weather warrior in 25-06 is nice.
