Which 44mag to buy?

A bunch of good suggestions. Personally, I'm a S&W guy but I wouldn't turn down a Ruger at the right price. I wouldn't take a Taurus for free.
Was it Bill Jordan or maybe Elmer Keith who was a big proponant of the model 29 with a 4" bbl? I know Keith was a fan of the hard cast semi-wadcutter in his.

The ultimate balanced package....

Exactly my thought, but I own one of the first 3000 made back in the 80s. It was called Mountain Revolver if I remember right and a Guns and Ammo article sold me on it. I even bought the M-4 chest holster set up they had in the pictures.

Almost bought one of these recently. Man, they are pricey now :-(

The last one I saw was $949 starting bid and I wish I had the cash available.:banghead:
I paid $357 for the one I have back in 1990.

Hello all,

I am looking to by a 44mag revolver. I would like it to have a 4" or 5" barrel. It will be used for plinking steel targets and I will probably take it deer hunting. I would like to keep the price below $800. Have seen the Taurus 44's online but never held one, no preference between single or double action. Any suggestions on which ones I should look at?

Thanks
I suggest you look at the Ruger single action revolvers. I myself would love to have the Ruger BlackHawk Hunter 7.5 -8" bbl Look on you tube at the videos.Hickock 45 has a video on that model and it looks like one hell of a .44 mag revolver. He was shooting I think 300 grain Black Talon ammo out of it and it looked like the gun handled it so well. The Rugers are built like a tank, and look great too. Another one I like is the Alaskan model .44 magnum. It's a short barrel though. The Taurus got much better with they're revolvers from what I hear.

Here are the pics I promised of the holster I had made for it. It is from Mernickle holsters in NV. Leather holster with stingray inlay. It is a cross draw. I love it and it is very well made.

Stay away from anything made by Taurus if you want a gun with no issues. The S&W and ruger are both fine wheel guns, couldn't go wrong with either one of those 2 makes

I have to vote for the S&W 629 in whatever barrel length - mine is a 6" and I just love it because of the trigger. It is so nice I got rid of my Ruger .454 because the trigger couldn't compare. I reload mid-strength loads and just have a great time shooting it, and with that wonderful trigger it is super accurate.

Poserhoser it shoots great. I have only shot it a little but at 20 yards I can do 1" groups on my steel plates. Thanks for all the replies everyone. I went with the ruger sbh lipsey's edition.

Virginian vs ruger vs bubblegum...let's get the pissing match behind us and help the guy out. Ruger is known for durability and are easily found and modified because there are a ton going to gunsmiths each day. That says they are strong and sell well but need some work. People beat Taurus into the ground but they have a lifetime warranty. Smiths are high priced guns. Colt got out of the business. Charter is cheap but who knows what quality they are, heritage probably makes one that I would be scared of....so let's lay it out this way...if a man were to go to a gunshop or on gunbroker, what would be the likely best buy under his budget number...probably a used colt if one could be found, maybe a smith ruger or Dan Wesson in DA guns. In SA a ruger is a common decent choice that is popular enough to make it nice.

Now back to seeing who can piss the farthest.

Now I see he settled after my bit of a rant...good pick. Hope you like it.

No need to piss he already bought a very nice revolver and holster . I would have no problem trading places with his choices . I have a 4.2" Redhawk .
