Which ACOG do you prefer for 3Gun, and why?

The choices go something like this:

TA01, 4X, crosshair reticle with stadia,
TA31, 4X, BAC, donut, triangle, or chevron reticle with stadia
TA11, 3.5X, BAC, donut, triangle, or chevron reticle with stadia, more eye relief

I currently have a TA11 on order, but like the small size of my friend's TA01, though I dislike the reticle. I was thinking of picking up a TA31...

What's your favorite?

thanks
Zak

FYI: The eye relief on the TA11 is a significant advantage over the other ACOG. It doesn't seem like a big deal until your in a match and you have all sorts of weird positions.

:)

I don't own an ACOG. I'm just a po' boy limited iron sight kind of guy.

However I did get to try out a huge selection of them. Team Trijicon brings a big suitcase full of them when ever they shoot in various matches, and they will let you try all of the different models out and see how they work for you.

I really want a compact 3x (not sure model number) with the bullet drop compensator and the chevron recticle. I was surprised by how easy they were to use. Fast too. Even at 300 yards, you just sat the chevron on top of a steel plate like a hat. :)

Gotta get me some of that!

I suppose part of the equation would be the kind of distances they shoot at the matches you frequent. If they dont have a 100 yard or better range, a high buck scope might not be worth it.

Well, I thought I'd update this thread since I have some experience with them now.

I was able to locate and acquire a TA11 (that's the 3.5x, 2.4" eye relief, BAC, red donut reticle) about a week before I left for the RM3GM. Until then, I was planning to use a TA01 (the 4x model, no BAC) I had borrowed from a friend for the match.

The 3.5x is quite a bit larger than the TA01, but not unwieldy on an AR.

Here is the difference in reticles:

When shooting the TA01, I felt as if I was really "in" the scope. That is, the eye relief is so short than my glasses had to be really close. Consequently, my peripheral vision was more limited and this made target transitions slower. At close range, the TA01 was difficult to use quickly.

To contrast, the TA11 has much more flexible eye relief. Since you're not so close to it, some movement during quick close shots does not disturb the sight picture as much-- or maybe just makes it easier to re-acquire. The fiber-optic lit "BAC" donut reticle is extremely fast to pick up. The BAC operation can be seen when scanning with regular 1x vision at targets; when you put the gun up, the red donut (a dot at close range) is superimposed on the background. Then when you sort of "look through" the scope, you zoom in. It's neat. And fast.

The crosshair reticle of the TA01 is much harder to pick up quickly on close targets.

I have no experience with the TA31 (a TA01 with the TA11-style BAC reticle), but I would guess it would still have the problems with it taking up so much of your field of view, and the inflexible eye relief.

I use the ARMS #19S throw-lever mount for the TA11 and it works well, but leaves the scope a little high. JP's idea of mounting the ACOG directly to the receiver has merit, but you need their new upper.

Zak,

thanks for that info...I am toying with replacing my Aimpoint atop my AR with one of thed ACOG..you experience is helpful...

eerw,

Though my upper won't be back from JP by then, I can bring the TA11 ACOG mounted on the #19S to the Colorado THR get-together. With the #19S, it can just drop onto any flat-top AR.
