I'm gathering parts to build my AR15 and I now have everything but the bolt/carrier assembly and barrel. I know the bolt/carrier assembly is important, but I don't know what to look for. I'm not going to be competing with this gun, just plinking at the range, so I don't think I need a "top of the line" assembly. That said, I don't want junk either. Eagle Firearms has the Rock River Arms assembly for $95 shipped. Is this one any good? What are some other good choices?

mtnbkr,

The RRA bolt/carrier group should be just fine for your needs and most everyone's as well. I don't own one, but I know a few members that do and they haven't had any problems with theirs.

The "in" thing to do these days is to acquire a Colt or FN bolt which are proof load tested and magnetic particle inspected. These bolts are generally marked as such with an "MP" stamp. The rationale behind this is knowing that the bolts have either met or exceeded the rigors of the mil-spec. Since it is probably the most high-stress component of the ar15, it gives people (including me) warm fuzzies.

This is why I run a Colt bolt housed in a LMT bolt carrier.

Besides the RRA or Colt units, LMT delivers a quality product and I have two of their bolts as spares. LMT supposedly proofs and inspects their bolts per the mil-spec with the exception of the "MP" stamp (the MP stamp is required per the mil-spec).

Thanks for the info. I ordered the RRA bolt based on what you and folks at AR15.com have said (I think you posted in one of the threads I read there as well). At $95 shipped, it's too good to pass up.
