If the reloading manual says to use a 40 S&W Speer 165gr JHP, can I use a different bullet of the same weight? Like a Barry's 165gr FMJ or a Hornady HP.
I haven't started reloading yet. My press and everything else is on back order. This is a good time to gather all the info I can.

It would be cool if Berry's said why. The why is because you may possibly see damage to the plating, leading of your barrel and a loss in accuracy if you drive them too fast.

Pete of 357sig.com ran Rainier plated bullets over 1450 FPS without experiencing those issues so your mileage may vary. Since you seem to be looking to just load some bullets and shoot targets with them, start at the bottom and work up until your gun functions reliably. There isn't a need to go beyond that just to burn some powder.

Try to find reliable data with a bullet that is the same weight and similar shape to what you can obtain. In my mind, the bearing surface of the bullet is key. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem manufactures agree with me and they don't provide that length information.

Thanks a lot. I didn't think there would be a problem as long as both were jacketed. I think I am starting to reload for the fun of it or to get lost in it, if you know what I mean.
