Between the Bersa and Shield I'd pick the latter, because there is more data out there on the Shield attesting to it's reliability/quality. Also accessories like mags and good holsters are cheaper and more widely available.

Personally I would buy the new Shield without the thumb safety.

For reference, my current rotation is something like:

  • Shield in .40
  • Walther PPS in 9
  • Kahr CW in 45
  • Glock 31 in .357 Sig (cold days with a coat, usually)
  • XD 4" in 9 (more cold days)
  • Sig Nightmare in .45 (days when I want to show my underwear around...:))
  • Kahr CW in .380

Of those, the Shield absolutely carries better than anything but the CW380. It's smooth, flat and easy to conceal. That said, the .40 is the only gun I have EVER had hand pain from when shooting; 50 rounds is all I can do. Something in the grip shape seems to impact a nerve or something, which has never happened with any other gun (including .44 Special Bulldog and .44 Magnum revolvers) I've ever shot.

Just an FYI; love the gun, still like to carry it (with the Apex sear), but that slim, tapered grip seems to come (for me, at least) with a price.

So what are you going to carry while you're waiting for the Glock Unicorn 9? Go with the Shield sans safety while you're waiting.

Try one of the slip on grips from Pachymayr. I think they are about $11.00 at MidwayUSA. I have one on both of my Shields and they make a huge difference. They have a small palm swell which makes them fill the hand better, without impacting concealment at all, and are made of a recoil absorbing material.

... Yes I know we can all learn how to shoot 10 pound triggers but it is harder to shoot them well without lots of practice.
Can only speak for myself, but other than family and friends, this is one of the things I live for. Practice is a Zen sort of thing.

What would we carry while waiting on a Glock Unicorn? LC9 and LC9S. Wife and me respectively. We really like them but I should have never encourage wife to try my LC9s. Now she wants one.

Okay, guys. Looks like it will be a Shield afterall. Caught the end of a gunbroker auction for a new Shield 9mm. Managed to win it at $359 shipped. I think that's a pretty decent deal.

Please continue to keep the thread going in case others are interested in following it.

Of your choices I would suggest the S&W Shield. I have over 2,000 rounds through mine with no failures to date. It is superbly accurate, low recoil, and has decent sights for a gun that I pocket carry. The target and video below were shot at 14 yards.

Mesinge2, what ammo were you using? If a hand load would you mind telling Bullet info, OAL, powder info and weight? I would love that accuracy out of my Shield...dont get me wrong, I am sure the gun is better than I. Its a skill to shoot a small gun well. Do you have the stock trigger? Model with or without safety. My 9mm Shield has the safety, will shoot with mag out version.

Thanks for any help. If you are shy about "load Recommendations" feel free to PM, but I am sure othe Shield shooters would like this info!

Thanks again,

PS I see from the notes with the video, "Hornady Z-Max" ammo...what weight bullet? Excellent shooting BTW.
