I saw the which tumbler thread and that reminded me that I needed advice on a chrono. With the primer shortage I am thinking about using large and small rifle primers with my pistol loads. I am guessing a chrono will help checking the loads for high pressure other than the visual signs which I am not sure about.

I own a Chrony, it does its' job but is very light sensitive, and that makes it hard to set up, also the program that runs the chrono.,could be more user friendly. I have the Beta, with the remote screen.

As far as pressure signs and diagnosing them with a chrono. ,the only thing that is going to tell you is the velocity, that it may be higher than the published loading data, the pressure signs,(cratered primers, poor, or hard extraction) are the only way other than a strain gauge, or a test barrel and the electronic equipment .

Just out of curiosity

Can someone help me understand how knowing the velocities changes the way you load?

ie how is this data used?

Is pistol and rifle data used differently?

Do you load to a certain velocity despite the published min/max loads or are you stuck within the confines of the load data despite the velocities (I think I know the answer to that one). If you are stuck then how does knowing the velocities change things?

I'm a gadget guy and would love a good reason to get a chrono.

For those who have to make a certain "power factor", the only way to know is to check with a chrono.

The only way to check one loads recoil against another is to know how fast each is going.

It is a good way to check yourself against load manuals. If you are getting 200 FPS more than they are, you probably need to back off, because you don't have any magic components that they don't.

It is mostly a fun toy for most of us, useful for driving us out of our minds trying to get good better ES & SD numbers while we forget that the load is shooting little one hole groups and we should be happy. :)
