I just purchased a used Ruger #1 in 45/70. Can you guys recommend a die set. The Lee Dies look good and are cheaper. I use them in 44 mag and they seem to work fine. Is the Lee FCD the thing to use?

Any recommendations on a light plinking load?

You might take a look at this link.

I have a LFC die but don't like it as much as the Redding Taper Crimp die. Others will swear the LFC die is the greatest thing going. Will you be shooting plain lead or jacketed bullets? The bullet weight makes a huge difference in felt recoil and some fairly mild loads can be had shooting 300 grain bullets. My personal preference is the Hornady 350 grain jacketed bullet over a full case of Varget or H-4895. I tried some IMR 30-31 recently and found it to be dirty. It shoots well enough but is just not as clean. Regular primers work well. I use a lot of the CCI 200 primers for 45-70.

I did not keep the hard kicking Ruger very long. The best load of the few I tried was 42 grains IMR 4895 and the 405 grain Remington JSP. About 1250 fps and a gracious plenty in a 7 pound rifle.

Trail Boss seems to be the way to go for light loads these days but they recommend it only for cast bullets which were not very accurate in MY Ruger.

I see no need for a crimp on single shot ammo, but some people say it gives better accuracy. A number of Shiloh shooters use a taper crimp.

I bought and use Lee Dies in 45-70. Sure the RCBS dies are better looking but I don't feel they work any better. I basically went for the price and use Lee dies for most of my reloading. I agree with Jim, no need to crimp ammo used in a single shot rifle. I do like the Lee Factory Crimp Dies but I have to agree Redding also makes a great crimp die along with several other great dies too like their Competition Seating Die. (but at a very high price)

I run Hornady dies plus a Lee FCD. I am adding a Lyman M die expander. I have been using these for awhile now with pistol cases and they are the bomb, especially for cast bullets.
Reddings expander die works exactly like the Lyman. If I were to do it over again, I'd probably get a Redding die set that also included their crimp die and call it done.
