which enfield woudl you recommend, i shoot and collect.
1. U.S. Savage #4 Mk. I Enfield .303 Caliber $169.00 from SOG
2. CHOICE #4 MK1 OR #1 MKIII.......$249.95 from classicarms

some of the savage enfields can be a bit rough. If the aim #4's are in better shape I'd lean toward that one but If you like to watch "charge of the light brigade" over and over then the #1 is the way to go!

J&g enfield

any thoughts on this?
"WWII era Enfield #4 rifles of various mfg and dates, good condition, may have some surface corrosion. Wood stocks. 303 caliber, with 10rd magazine. No bayonet included. C&R eligible. "

Recently, the Savage Enfields have been somewhat more desirable here in the States. Because they were made here is the main reason. You can get some Gems, and you can get some junk. With SOG, you would have the option to return any junk you get. Best thing is to get all you can, as the supply is dwindling. I don't know about Classic. Century has some, as well as AIM, I think.

I got a Lend Lease Savage No4 Mk1 from Century Arms. I got it as my first gun, and it was only $99. I love shooting it, but most gun stores are usually sold out of 303 ammo. This being so I don't shoot it as much as I would like to.

I purchased all my Enfields between 10 and 15 years ago. Enjoy shooting the No 4's and the the No. 1's. Given a preference, I'd take the No 4. Find them to be more accurate and easier to handle. Too bad you didn't get started earlier as good Enfields were under $100 and some new No. 4's, mfg in 1955 came on the market for $125.00. If you reload, don't sweat 303 ammo. Cases, bullets and loading dies are plentifull.

Doug the only thing beter than one Savage is two.

Thanks.

Go with the No. 4 and check the headspace, with proper guages, before you shoot it. It's easier to find another bolt head for a No. 4 if the headspace is bad. No. 4 bolt heads are numbered, No.1 bolt heads are not. For a No.4 you can look at the bolt head you have and try the next number up. Unless you have a 3. Then you're looking at machining or another barrel. If you have a No.1, you must try a handful until you find one that works. Always using proper headspace guages to check the headspace. Nothing else will tell you if the headspace is within spec.
Thousands of both 'em have been assembled out of parts bins with zero QC. Century is one of the places who did this. I wouldn't touch any firearm from Century.

I'm having that exact problem. My Enfield needs a new breechbolt head, and the part of it with the number is missing. This doesn't bother me too much because this just means that shells aren't ejected as they are suppose to be all the time. No way would I buy a new barrel just to be able to eject shells. Plus I'm going to try to buy a new "1" from springfieldsporters. Other than this minor inconvenience, I've been completely satifised with my Century Arms Savage. So far after completely stripping the rifle, all parts, even the wood was marked with an "S."

Just got off the phone with Classic Arms so heres an update. They are out of all #1 MKIII's. The #4 MK1's are Savage made. And there is no additional fee if you use a credit card. The gunshop here in town does not open yet for another 1/2 hour but when he does we'll get the ball rolling and I'll have a #4 or two.
Thanks again to silverlance for the info about Classic Arms.

To answer the mans question you can't hardly go wrong with a Savage. I almost bought another Savage this weekend at Big-5 for $139 but my Sunday ride on the Honda took all day and I missed the deal.

I bought one of the Savage enfields from SOG and I am very pleased with the condition of the rifle. It's also a nice piece of american history. I can't afford a Garand or an M1 carbine so!

Man, those Great War SMLE sniper rigs are just so fascinating. And rare! Only ever see them in books, sadly, and not in my living room, where they belong. :D
