I found myself impressed with this list put together by Vern Humphrey in this caliber thread: http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=199164
Vern Humphrey said:
Using the order in the Original Post:

1. 30-06 -- the cartridge that's "too good." It will do anything you need done on this continent, and in the hands of a reloader has more potential than the .308.

2. 12ga -- this has eclipsed all other shotgun cartridges. With modern loadings, it ain't your father's 12 gauge anymore.

3. .22 -- the most popular and useful cartridge ever, bar none. Thousands of rounds of .22 LR are shot for each centerfire round. Adjusted for inflation, it's far cheaper now than when I was a boy.

4. .357 -- Incredibly versatile for anything from small game (I usually use a .38 Special loading for this) to self defense, to short range deer hunting. I include the .38 Special as "part of the family" of the .357.

5. .45ACP -- in the platform designed for it, the incomparable M1911, the finest fighting handgun and cartridge ever.

6. 30-30 -- the classic deer round. I still carry a .30-30 in my saddle boot when riding.

7. .223 Remington -- not only the standard US military cartridge these days, but a fine target and varmit round in its own right.

8. .17 HMR -- it's here to stay. Everything the .22 WMR will do, and better.

9. .308 -- the .30-06 in a shorter case. Not fully the equal of the .30-06 but close enough.

10. .44 Magnum -- the best of revolver rounds for deer hunting (albeit you can load a Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt to slightly shade it.) Unlike other high-capacity rounds, ordinary people can actually shoot the .44 Magnum and shoot it well.

I'm curious. Which is your favorite firearm or which one firearm would you recommend for each of these ten calibers?

Classic Calibers. I'd love to have a collection of what I consider the classic guns that "made" each caliber or was/is the most popular gun made in the caliber.

.30-06 - M1 Garand "The Ultimate Battle Rifle"

12 Ga. - Model 870 Remington - Good for everything that walks or flys.

.22LR - Ruger 10/22 "the bane of tin cans and squirrels everywhere"

.357 Magnum - Colt Python - make mine blued steel with a 6" barrel

.45 ACP - 1911 Colt "the genuine article - real American autoloader"

.30/30 - Winchester 94 "Bambi Buster"

.223 - Colt M16 - Taking out the world's trash daily for over 30 years.

.17 HMR - Ruger 77/17 - Don't know that it belongs in this list.

.308 - M60 GPMG - Some would say the M14, I think though that the M60 was/is the best military use of this round.

.44 Magnum - S&W Model 29 "do you feel lucky, punk?"

1. 30:06, I go with the Garand.
2. 12 Gauge, 870 rules
3. 22. The Ruger 10/22
4. 357 Mag, Smith Model 60, light and very dependable when necessary
5. 45 ACP, the Colt Commander
6. 30:30 The good old Winnie 94
7. 223 The Colt 6920
8. 17 the Ruger with a Midway package
9. 308 the National Match M1A
10 44 Mag, an old model Ruger Super Blackhawk.

.357 Magnum - S&W 19 with 4" barrel
.45 ACP - the 1911 is fine, depends on execution
.30-30 - the classic Winchester 94. Certainly the Marlin is a more than credible subsitute
.308 Win - I'd like a Savage 99
.44 Magnum - S&W 29
12 Gauge - without knowing more, the Remington 870
.22 LR - in a pistol, the Browning Buckmark

1) 30-06 – Remington 700 or M1 Garand

2) 12ga – Remington 870 or Benelli M3 (my personal favorite)

3) .22 – (Pistol) Kimber Rimfire Target (to match a 1911 in .45ACP)
(Rifle) Ruger 10/22

4) .357 – Colt Python, Smith and Wesson 686, or Desert Eagle

5) .45ACP – 1911 (I like Kimber) or HK USP

6) 30-30 – Winchester 94

7) .223 Remington – Without a doubt, an AR15

8) .17 HMR – Ruger 77/17

9) .308 – AR platform, FN FAL, HK G3 or Remington 700.

10) .44 Magnum – Colt Anaconda or Desert Eagle

1. .30-06--I am assuming you are using it in a hunting role so while I would personally opt for a Model 700, a Win M70 would also work well.
2. 12 gauge--Remington 870, of course.
3. .22LR--Pair of Rugers, a Mk II and a 10/22.
4. .357--Nother Ruger, a GP-100.
5. .45 ACP--Glock 21 or 30.
6. .30-30--Marlin or Winchester, whatever suits your fancy.
7. .223 Remington--Better varmint cartridge than fighting cartridge IMO. Make mine a Rem M700 with a Leupold.
8. .17 HMR--Eh, whatever...
9. .308--M14 or FAL, possibly good HK roller lock or clone.
10. .44 Magnum--Either a Redhawk or, I am actually quite fond of the Desert Eagle.

Truth be told I could thin the list out a bit--replace the .357 Mag and the .45 with a 10mm Auto Glock, take the Mk II but lose the 10/22, or the .223, whatever--only need one poodle shooter, IMO. The .17 can take a ten foot walk off a nine foot plank and not be missed. I can admire the .30-30 and wouldn't mind one, but ain't much of a lever gun fan. I rather just slap a rifled barrel on the gauge and use sabot slugs. That leaves the .308 to take up the slack on serious social situations, the .44 handles stuff too big or mean for the 10mm, and the 06 picks up everything else.

i would add the 17m2, if you like the pelts of the wee stuff, or like to eat them without blowing them up, the m2 is the best fuzzy getter within 100 yds ever.

1. 30-06 -- Pre-64 Winchester Model 70, 22" barrel with medium power scope and sourdough backup, per Elmer Keith's advice.

2. 12ga -- Mossberg 500. Better safety than the 870, extremely tough and reliable.

3. .22 -- CZ 452 ZKM model with tangent iron sights, no scope.

4. 357 -- Colt Python, 6" barrel.

5. .45ACP -- Original Colt M1911

6. 30-30 -- Winchester 94, with no barrel bands and 24" barrel

7. .223 Remington -- CZ 527

8. .17 HMR -- ISK

9. .308 -- Remington 700 short action.

10. .44 Magnum -- Freedom Arms No. 83, 7 1/2" barrel

30-06
Any one of a number of old bolt-action sporting rifles put together by Browning, BRNO, Sako, Tikka, Voere, Husqvarna etc.

12ga
Any number of old euro double trigger side-by-sides.

.22

.45ACP

30-30
An old Winchester 94 - minus the crossbolt "safety" - or a new Marlin 336.

.223 Remington
CZ-527

.17 HMR
Now I'm stumped, cause I wouldn't want one. OK; a Marlin bolt-action.

.308
Same as for 30-06

.44 Magnum
An old blued 6" model 29

I like Ithaca 37's a lot, but only up to a point. That point is magnum slugs. They're simply too light to be practical or entirely safe with the hottest brennekes. My former roommate bulged the barrel on one firing Brennekes out of it. But I do like them for lighter buckshot loads, target loads and the like. I agree the factory furniture on Mossbergs is hit or miss. They're not exactly known for their hardwoods :D I usually swap out the wood for polymer and steel stocks. What I like about them is how they do with hot slugs and how resistant they are to jamming up. I carried one for a fishing season two summers ago and by the end of it the sand literally poured out of the action. But it still cycled! The 870's are also very tough, but have an idiotic safety that you can't see when you're aiming the shotgun. For going cocked-and-locked on the trail, they're a great way to blow your feet off.

From my personal collection, the choices I've made.

1. .30-06- M1 Garand.

2. 12Gauge- Remington 870 Special Purpose 26" Remchoke. Beretta 1201FP riot 20".

3. .22LR- Ruger 10/22. Browning Buckmark 5 1/2" Slabside.

4. .357- S&W M28 Highway Patrol, 6".

5. .45ACP- Combat Commander Stainless.

6. 30-30- Don't currently own one, but would choose Marlin 336.

7. .223 Remington- Colt M6731 16" HBAR II A3.

8. .17 HMR- Why is this caliber on the list? Ruger 10/22 magnum, .22WMR.

9. .308- DS Arms SA58 Std. 21" w/carry handle. Remington 600 Mohawk 18 1/2", made into a Scout rifle per Colonel Cooper. Burris Scout scope.

10. .44 Magnum- Marlin 1894 20".

My previous post

Regarding my previous post in this thread:
I probably should have just said that I prefer the Ithaca and left it at that. Reasons why I don't like other guns don't belong in this thread.
Sorry.

Here's what I have:

1. 30-06 -- Pre-64 Winchester Model 70, with a 3X9 variable and an aperture sight snuggled under the objective bell. I also have an M1 Garand and a couple of M1903A3 Springfields. Given a choice, I will pick a pre-64 Model 70 (or a "classic") in most calibers.

2. 12ga -- Ithaca Model 37. This gun is about 50 years old and solid as a rock.

3. .22 -- Kimber Model 82 with a Buris 4X mini scope. This rifle has killed a boxcar load of squirrels

4. 357 -- Colt M357, the precursor of the Python, with a 6" barrel. Icarried this gun on my first tour in Viet Nam, and it works.

5. .45ACP -- I have several. My current carry gun is a Kimber Classic, early style.

6. 30-30 -- Winchester 94, with with a Williams 5D sight, bought when it actually cost $5. I carry this rifle in a saddle boot when on horseback.

7. .223 Remington -- CZ 527 with a 3X9 variable.

8. .17 HMR -- Don't have one. I do have a Ruger 77/22M and I would buy the Ruger 77/17 or the CZ 452.

9. .308 -- Don't have one. Never really wanted one. If I were to get one, it would be an M1A.

10. .44 Magnum -- Don't have one. I do have three revolvers in .45 Colt -- one New Service and two Ruger Blackhawks. In the latter two revolvers, I can equal the performance of the .44 mag.

I tend to have a lot of oddballs -- like Bigfoot Wallace, my custom '03 Springfield in .35 Brown-Whelen, or my M1922 MKII Springfield .22.

CNYCacher

I personally don't care cause I have been known to have a pretty bad mouth, but on this forum, you will probably be asked to edit that post to remove the swearing. In a normal conversation you could say that and I wouldn't even bat an eye and I realize you didn't use the term malaciously, but on this forum they try to keep it rated PG. Just a head's up to a new member.

Secondly, I have no experience with the Mossberg but I've been shooting the 870 since I was 12 and have over 10,000 rounds through about half a dozen of them and have never had any problems with them. You really can't make them stop. I have put over 500 rounds through mine in about two hours, at times shooting it so fast the wood forend got warm and the barrel was so hot the choke tube had to be screwed in after every magazine and it still chugged along seemingly impervious to my efforts to make it fumble. It has went over 2,000 rounds between cleanings and shrugged it off and has seen temps from around zero to over 100, been wet, and handled every type of ammunition I have stuffed in it with impunity. If I was more of a shotgun fan, it would be my favorite firearm because even with the classic looks of wood on blued steel, it has proven to be stake-your-life-on-it reliable and, as near as I can tell, pretty much invincible. The cheaper Express models may not have the asthetics of my Wingmaster, but they don't appear to be any less functional. As far as shotguns go, the 870 has got to be among the best.

. 30-06: Remington 700
12 ga: Weatherby SAS semi auto
.22: Baretta Neos
.357: S&W 586
.45 ACP: Glock 30
30-30: As much as I'd like to say Win 94, Marlin 336 is in my gun safe
.223: Bushmaster Carbon 15
.17 HMR: dunno
.44 Mag: Model 29...is there any other????
