Which would you pick up off of your nightstand to defend yourself with, a 22 caliber double action revolver or a 44 caliber cap and ball revolver? Why? Lets try to stay on topic. I think we all know a .357 would be better so lets try not to go there.

Neither. I have literally dozens of guns I'd choose before those, including scoped hunting rifles.

I suppose if all I had were those (and I do have more than one example of each), I'd go with the .44, loaded with 35 grains Pyrodex P. Certainly a lot more powerful.

I don't think many will take that as a real serious question, friend
much as I love rimfires, 22LR is never a choice for personal defense unless there simply is no other choice (which is true for some folks, and I think it's just fine in such a case)

a 44 hole is a 44 hole with 44 bullet weight behind it, no matter what muzzle it comes out of
and this is 'nightstand' duty, not CCW
(you could mebbe just pistol whip 'em into submission with that big old 44 anyway)

The wife and I are planning a trip to Europe. We've narrowed down our travel choices to the following:

a) Mule
b) Hang-glider

...

You know, time was when lots of folks counted on black-powder firearms to defend their lives. I'd imagine the cap-n-ball wheelgun would still put someone underground if you directed the ball to the right spot.

Now, as then, sucess would hinge entirely on practice, practice, practice.

Probably only get one good shoot with the bp before excess burning bp cover my view and started a fire on something you owned and you might not see the BG to shoot again. The BG would know if he has a firearm to just shoot to the smoke or at least throw stuff there. Both may or may not fire , rimfire vs caps and moisture problems sooo I would take 9 .22lr shots of quick but controled fire of 60 gr agulia at the BG. Then throw the revolver and run.

22, had a 50 cal rifle misfire on a 9 point buck once. Hearing a snap instead of a bang at the moment of dire need would be very dishearting.
