If you were to buy any grade of M1 from the CMP, which would it be? My question is based on a balance of affordability and quality.

My choice would be Service grade Springfield. Also, it's not part of the poll, but which manufacturer would you prefer? Winchester, Springfield, or H&R? I understand that many of the M1's have mismatched parts, so it's just for major parts' sake like barrel, receiver, stock, etc.

Service, no doubt, no question.

I like Springfield personally, but all would be fine. Winchester is more collectible.

Service grade should net you a nice, solid shooter. As for manufacturer, short answer is Springfield for your first M1 rifle.

Best of luck in whatever you choose!

Voted "Service Grade" since the appeal to me is participating in modern and vintage match shooting.

"Correct Grade" would be a collectible hanging on a wall or behind a glass case.

The Correct Grades are very nice but the best bang for the buck are the Service Grade. Unfortunatly some of them do come in the ugly brown new commercial birch stocks. If you dont care for them you can ask for USGI wood. Doesnt mean you will get it but doesnt hurt to ask

How are the H&R models? CMP currency does not have any Springfield models in service grade.

Depends.

If you don't care about anything else, other than it is an M1, the Service.

If think more collectible guns are cool, I'd look at the Service Special.

If you can go and handpick, I'd look at the Field Grades - there are some gems in there.

HRA are no different than the SA Garands just a different manufacture. A Service Grade is a Service Grade,

If your ordering by mail go Service Grade....The Specials are excellent an most have almost new barrels to go along with the new wood, but your paying more, I've heard from different folks that the HRA barrels are known for great accuracy. An the HRA SG right now are the best some have seen in a long time....I would recommned this to you if you were my brother...however....a HRA SG may very well have a SA barrel!!!! When you can't pick it out you never know....I picked out a Field grade at the N. store...stock was rough but it came out great when I was done with it...it was the only thing making it a FG..it had almost all HRA parts an in excellent shape....I also have a WWII FG SA with a HRA barrel that is my most accurate. Good luck an good shooting.

Service Grade. But why?

A very experienced friend who retired from a military rifle team, bought it at the Camp Perry CMP (for me) in early July, during the matches.
He has won over a dozen Garands as prizes in rifle matches, and seems to be able to recognize value.

The bore's condition Might not be typical for a 'S. Grade', but it resembles the bore in my chrome-lined SKS.
If a guy is hung up on having mostly SA or Win. parts, then a personal visit is required.

How come no collector grade?

of which I have one. I bought it 10 years ago along with a select grade, like correct grade now. Last spring I bought a M1D which is a brand new rifle since rebuild on a 3-43 Springfield receiver.....Buy the best grade you can afford.....chris3

There havent been collector grades for several years. Again yes Correct Grades are very nice and if you can afford it sure but the best deal is a Service Grade and use the money saved for ammo

What Tim said.

If you can get there, no reason not to save the money and find a mechanically desirable Field Grade. Might get a banged-up stock, but a little love can fix 'em up. The staff at the stores will help you find a good one. Mine is!
