Which Hi Power would you carry?

So I intend to start carrying one of my HP's on a regular basis. They're both mintish, and I know it will eventually start to show wear. One is a Browning Practical. The other is an FN Hi Power in bright blue. I do realize that the blued is not up to neglect or it will rust. That's not even an issue as anal as I am. It will see regular care. So which is going to look better with some miles on it? Which should remain the safe queen? I love them equally.
Thanks!

I'd go with the Practical as a carry gun. The combination of a hard-chromed frame and an epoxy-coated slide would have much better wear protection than the high polished blue of the FN. (I have a few Hi Powers myself; they are great guns, and my Practical is one of my favorites.)

None, I don't like the BHP.

Jim

Interesting that you would rather carry "None" than one of the finest service pistols ever designed. I would think any gun--even one you didn't like-- would be better than "None."

IMO: They haven't made a Browning Hi-Power since whenever it was they discontinued the original ring-hammer Blue & Walnut one I owned in 1970.

However, if I still had it, I would still carry it.
And if I could find another one for $108.95 new, like it was when I bought that one, I would buy two of them.

I could strip one and sell the slide stop pin and pay for the other one!

Practical....hands down. I'm not sure about the bluing on yours, but I have a 75th that looks like a black mirror. I won't carry that. YMMV.

I saw a sweet looking 75th anniversary edition BHP at my LGS recently. I would own that in a heartbeat(if I had the funds :)), but not sure if I would carry it. More of a safe queen...

Either way, it is a SWEET pistol.

Congratulations, Jim, you win the award for most useless post of the day.

To the OP, I would probably carry the Practical, just because it may hold up a bit better to the wear and tear of daily carry. I know you said you were anal about your guns, but you might be surprised what can sneak up on you in the rust department... Plus, why damage a bright blue gun? IMHO, they are beautiful. Shooters, but not something I would carry regularly....

I only have one BHP made in the 80's with the bright bluing on it I bought last year. I shoot it quite a bit, but I'll admit that it's a safe queen. I would carry the practical.

I've carried many blued guns but I couldn't bring myself to put wear on this one.:uhoh:

We talked during your moment of weakness a couple of weeks ago, glad you changed your mind ;)

I'd carry the practical, better sights, no bluing to worry about. In fact, that's what I do, my all-chrome practical gets a lot more belt time than my digi-cam HP.

But I am also anti-safe queen's so there's nothing wrong with rotating your stock if they are equally reliable.

Yeah, sorry about that. I'd forgotten the reason to have two of some items. It would be a shame to have a handgun do all the right things for you, and not carry it regularly. So what's a little weight?

Whichever one has a better trigger...

My EDC I personally love the way blued guns wear. There is somthing classic and classy about it. YMMV

No need to apologize, I was happy to see you decided to keep it. I think the practical is the best HP ever made from a pure shooting perspective and they are not getting any easier to come by.

Here's my favorite "walking the woods" rig..

+1 to 71commander. try them both and carry your favorite.

btw, my bhp weighs 31ozs. empty and 38ozs. fully loaded. my colt 1911 weighs 38ozs. empty and 44ozs. fully loaded. it's all relative!

Gotta be the Practical to keep from being a cry-baby in later years over the damaged finish on the bright bluing, oh yeah, and the sights.

Unlike most others, I side with Lone Watie... to paraphrase "...it's not for shootin', it's just for lookin' at"

If the FN is one of the more recent imports it would have the same sights as any other MKIII. The Practicals sights are no different that other MKIIIs IIRC.

Aha! Good point. Photos would've gone a long way on this one.

Yes pics would help. There were some bright blue "classic" models with the half moon deal but I cannot remember if they were Browning or FN marked guns. The last FN marked guns I remember were the guns blown out at CDNN for $500. I should have bought 10 of those. LOL

Yes, it's a recent FN with the same sights, newer rollmark. The bluing is really deep. At the time, I bought an enamel MKIII for 399, and this one for 499. Wish I still had the other one too. We'll never see deals like that again. I really need to post pics.:scrutiny:

IIRC, some BHP Practicals came with factory adjustable "Millet" rear sights like my 1994 MK III SIlver Chrome. That's when rubber mag pads were all the rage.
