I recently got a Sig Sauer P220 with low mileage; I wanted a reliable and accruate .45 acp for home defense; I have only shot 2 hollowpoint loads so far: Remington Golden Sabre 185gr jhp and Remington UMC 230gr jhp; both functioned well and grouped good for me; I am not searching for the 'Holy Grail' but like to have 3 or 4 different loads to choose from as availability varies from shop to shop and finding loads (as I rotate out ammo from time to time) can get frustrating and yield little results;

what have you shot from your P220? thanks

whenever i get a new .45, i always start out shooting it with Federal 230gr Match FMJ and their 185gr JHP. these loads have proven accurate in every gun i've owned and gives me a baseline of how the gun performs.

i usually carry my 220 with Ranger Talon 230gr JHP as that used to be my duty load and now i'm just in the habit.

the other load i really like is the Speer 200gr JHP...that's how i test of a gun's ability to feed hollowpoints.

i've never had any luck getting the Golden Sabre to shoot very well in my 220 or 220STs

from practice, i like the Blaser 230gr FMJ...both clean and accurate

Availability dictates use here. Never had a misfire with Winchester FMJ or JHP. SAme with Remington. Have also used Blazer, Golden Sabre, Speer Lawman and Federal HPs and the SIG eats them up. Never tried Wolf and from the feedback I've heard from other shooters and ammo sellers I don't think I will.

Never had the ammo handy enough in bulk to really do a hard test, but the two 220s I've owned through the years both ran just fine on the JHP I fed it -- Winchester, Federal, Hornady and Cor-Bon if I recall correctly (can't remember specific loads).

thank you all for your input; I'm getting the feeling that the Sig P220 is designed to accept alot of different brands/styles/weights of hollowpoint loads...much different from various 1911's I have owned in the past

I have the Sig P220 ST

I use the Honady Tap 230 gr.+ P becuse my barrel is under 5" inches.
$20 a box is a decent price.
I also have the ole' stand-by Federal Hydra Shock 230 gr..
I'm from the ole' school where slow and heavy is the way to go if you want to slow down the " Zombies " ! LOL !!

Any answer you get here isn't the right answer. The right answer is for you to shoot your gun with different ammo; and decide which one feels the best and is the most accurate for you. As for expanding and doing it's job; any of the reputable companies will be fine. But as 9mmepiphany said he couldn't get golden sabers to shoot well in his P220; (And I am not questioning his results); I on the other hand make the Golden Saber 230 HP my #1 self defense ammo in my P220. Then again; I haven't found ANY ammo; and I've tried probably all of them if they can be bought; that wouldn't work in my P220. The damn gun will shoot pebbles if I wanted it to. It's a 1989 W. Germany made P220. And it's the most reliable and most accurate gun I've ever shot. The only one I ever saw that had problems, was a friend who "THOUGHT" he knew more than SigSauer does about guns, and replaced springs with a set of "Wolff Springs". He had all sorts of ejection and feeding problems. Once I "FORCED" him to try putting back in the "Original" springs; he hasn't had 1 issue. But again; you have to shoot the ammo and test it for yourself. And if you thing "XYZ" ammo shoots the best out of your gun, then that is what you should shoot. And it doesn't matter what one person here thinks. Especially if they say "XYZ" ammo sucks. All that matters is that it works for you. You're shooting a 45 caliber bullet. There isn't a larger diameter self defense caliber out there. (Sorry, 460 and 500 don't count as self defense calibers). At the speed of a 45acp (800-900 fps), you can shoot hard ball lead at the bad guy and it will stop them.

speer gold dot 200 gr. hollow points

are the infamous " Flying Ashtray " that are " mushroom city " after expanding.
230 gr.'s are awesome as well, but perform better from the 5" inch barrel like a 1911 than the 4.5 " of the Sig P220. :)

4.4inch-Barrel-230gr Loads are the Best.

Winchester LE-230gr Bonded/or/Federal LE Tactical 230gr Bonded:)
