This may be a complete newbie question, but I just wanted to know if their were varying qualities when buying an M1 Garand and if certain years were made better than others. I don't care so much if the Garand model was made or used during wartime, so I would also like to know if the brand new Garands being made by springfield are any good. Thanks for the help.

most will say its better to get a used GI one then a new Springfield inc Garand.The GI recievers with GI parts is preferable even if mixed mastered and you can replace or steam and dishwash a stock taking out many of the dings.
Any GI contract one was built to spec no matter the maker.The barrel condition is a matter also.
More educated posters will give you better insight then me though.

Avoid the "new" Garand.
For a shooter, newer mil-spec is better. Some say H&R (all made after WW2) is the best for accuracy.
FWIW - www.odcmp.com is now "out" of Garands.
The classic Garand is a platform. Upon which you can add a new barrel and new parts. That's what the military did. Garands are usually judged by muzzle wear and throat erosion. Basically, a 30-06 bullet should not drop into the muzzle of a Garand. If it slips all the way in, it's the sign of a worn-out barrel. But barrels can be replaced.
As far as ammo - you are best off shooting 150grain FMJ military surplus through a Garand. Some from Korea uses corrosive primers, but there is a lot of good surplus ammo still available. Do a search on Garand ammo. The higher pressures of newer gunpowder and higher bullet weight can harm the op rod on a Garand.
Get a Garand now if you still can.

CMP is the way to go but unfortunatley they are out of them at this time but it has been made know they will have more later on . It has been stated that they are planning on building CMP Select rifles which will use parts from disasembled rifles and new barrels and wood. They should also be getting more shipments in of returns from overseas. See link for what the CMP director said:

1) Save money so when they have rifles you can order on the first day possible.
2) Buy genuine M2 ball from CMP - it is NON corrosive

Another vote for a CMP gun. Even the lower quality grades from CMP (rack and field grades) are preferable to the "new" Springfield Armory Inc. guns.
This is the Greek rack grade I just got a few weeks ago.
As RotR said, muzzle/throat erosion may be an issue, but mine was fine. If all else fails, you can always get the gun rebarreled.
