What magnified oprtic for 3 gun?

Nikon M223 1-4x with 600 yard BDC reticle or Eotech 512 with 3x magnifier.
I already have the 512 just need the magnifer.

I recently had the chance to look through a Nikon M223. The 1x setting isn't a true 1x, and the magnification ring was a little bit stiff on turning, but for an entry-level scope, it should work just fine. I run an ACOG TA11, and I'm a huge proponent of BDC reticles. If you know the distance to the target it becomes dead simple to make hits.

The Eotech with a magnifier will work as well, though you'll need to practice your holds at longer distances until they become second nature.

With either scope you'll need to practice when you make your magnification adjustment. The last thing you want is to bring your rifle up to shoot a close-range target and find you're looking through a scope at 4x magnification.

Also, since you live in New Mexico, you do realize you're right in the middle of two of the biggest 3 gun matches held in the country, right?

Rocky Mountain 3 Gun is held at the Whittington Center in Raton, NM, and Superstition Mountain is held near Phoenix, AZ. Both are great matches.

Didn't know that, 3 gun is still pretty new to me. But I have learned the unmagnified Eotech ain't the best and my HD M500 converted to 590 with a Surefire is too heavy.

Of those two I would take the dedicated optic, not the red dot + magnifier combination. In my experience the field of view with that kind of setup is worse than a "real" variable scope.

Some thoughts on fighting/3gun optics

I've competed with the TA11 ACOG since 2003.

For 3-gun a 1-4,6,8 depending on what you can afford seems to be the thing. The Trijicon TR-24, Meopta K-dot, Burris XTR-14, Vortex PST are all good for medium price. The fancy one's like the Swarovski and stuff are really good if you can afford them. In the cheaper range there are the Millett DMS and Nikon 223, some get good results with the Weaver 1-3.

Otherwise you are into multiple optics, an ACOG with an offset red dot, or a red dot and magnifier.

It all depends on what division you want to shoot in too.
