I just turned a newby onto guns. She is looking to get her first and is interested in a Mak. She liked my Russian a lot.

It is my understanding that Russians and East Germans are pretty much off the market.

Are the Bulgarians still around?

Also looking for opinions on Polish and Hungarian. They are available on AIM and SOG.

Thanks for any input.

The polish and hungarian pistols that use 9x18 makarov rounds are very different from the makarov pistol. General consensus is they are inferior, other people can list the differences. Would think a new bersa thunder 380 would be better if you can't find a makarov.

Bulgarians and EGs can still be found. Someone just mentioned finding a whole table of them at the Indy 1500. Keep your eyes peeled, always can find them on the makarov board for sale and on the gun auction sites.

I recently bought an unissued bulgarian, so it's not rare to find them I'm sure.

There's a russian on sale on glocktalk, expensive though ($400+). Think there's a norinco on auctionarms.com.

Been a while since I've seen any Bulgarian Makarovs. I bought the last 2 my dealer had (perfect for me, since one had a well worn blue finish and the other looked to be unissued). Strangely, I've been seeing alot of East German Maks at area gunshows, usually in $250-300 range, along with the odd Russian commercial. Good price on the East German ones but I already have one and I'm not really looking to get another (no reflection on the gun, the German made guns have superior fit/finish). I have 2 Polish P-64s. One is 1968 manufacture, the other is 1973 (production years are stamped right there on the slide in plain view). I'm told that the later models are best, since there were small, but significant design changes made. Both have v. heavy triggers. Sights are so-so at best. I know a gunsmith who carries/shoots them regularly and he swears by them. Once I get mine out to the range, I may start carrying one.

OK, now for the advice section. If you positively cannot find a Makarov, but find that you want one, why not look into the CZ-82/83s 82s are available only in 9mm Mak and only as surplus, but some really nice specimens have been recently imported by SOG and others. The 83s are the civilian version and are also available in 9mm Mak as well as .380. These are first quality guns of exceptional design. I'm going to buy the next 83 I see in 9mm Mak (they're a little hard to come by, but they do surface) or maybe an 82 if I find one I like.

Another vote for the CZ-82! Several more rounds and there are some in great shape at a great price available now!

Nothing against the Mak's but I think the CZ's are much more refined and a better buy for the money.

Makarov.com has a bunch of 1962 EG Maks. I bought a Bulgy locally but i havent' seen one on anyone's shelves for a while. I am soooooo glad I got one.

KY Imports has Bulgarian MAKS

Check out www.kyimports.com Bulgarian Makarovs come in 3 different conditions and prices.Maks that are rated good are at $150.00. Very good at $160.AND excellent for $170. Have fun.

KYImports is notorious for not keeping their website current.
Call them and you will find out that the Bulgie Makarovs are no longer in stock (have not been for a year).

CZ 82 sounds pretty good, but being a double stack mag how is the width of the grip? That feature is what really made her like my Mak.

I have a CZ 75 D PCR She thought it was kind of big. How would this compare to the CZ 82?

Any ideas on any other guns with small grips that a rookie might use?
I want rock solid reliability, a safety and accurate.
(NO POCKET PISTOLS PLEASE)

Thanks,
