I want to get a 22 to have something to practice with that shoots cheap. I will almost exclusively be shooting it at the range and want to be able to shoot from a variety of positions. I also want it to be bolt action. I've decided to get the Savage Mark II. I was leaning towards the BV, which has a bull barrel. I read several places that it is a very good gun. My question though is if one should only use a bull barrel when using a rest. That would remove some of the versatility that I'm looking for. I've never shot or owned a rifle with a bull barrel before.

Oh, in case it helps, my primary interest in shooting is to prepare for hunting.

Thanks.

I have a very similar rifle in the 93R17GLV (heavy barrel, wood stock, left handed). The rifle is far from heavy and most importantly is well balanced with the heavier barrel and shoots very well off-hand. The only reason that I don't own a Mark II is that Savage doesn't offer it in a normal stock with a heavy barrel and left-handed action. If they did I would have at least one of them in the safe.

I went with the BV but the TR also was on the list. The BV was the best compromise for target and hunting use. The heavy barrel is easier to steady IMO than a light barrel just adds to the walking weight.
