Which model Smith & Wesson ?

I'm gonna do a trade with a buddy for one of his S&W's. Either a Model 27 or a Model 19. The 19 is a 4", the 27 a 6". Both are blued and in very good condition. I want the 19, but now he's offered the 27, too. Which would you trade for? Cost to me is the same for either.

I favor 6" over 4", though a 27 should be worth more bucks than a 19

but on that deal, I would go with fits my hand best (k-frame), but that's my hand not your hand

if you wanna feed a diet of full power .357s, id go with the N-frame

It would also depend on what you want one for and how you would use it. For a carry/sd/all around piece the 19 might be a better bet. If you're looking to hunt and target shoot the 27 would be my choice.

Thanks for the great responses.This would be my third model 19 since the 70's. Always seem to trade 'em off, tho. Wanted another for a carry option, but today he threw the model 27 into the mix, it got me to thinking about it, too. I would like to get them both, but can't right now.

I have one of each. No question, the Model 27 is the fancier gun, with the fancy checkering on the top strap and the barrel rib. Yes, it certainly was one of the classiest guns S&W ever made. You simply have to decide whether you prefer the N frame or the K frame.

Just so you know, the reason the Model 19, originally called the 357 Combat Magnum came into being was some old time peace officers like Bill Jordan were looking for a lighter duty revolver than the original 357 Magnum, which eventually became the Model 27. Officers who carried the weapon every day were looking for something a bit lighter than the large N frame 357 Magnum. But it took about 20 years for metallurgy to allow a 357 Magnum revolver to be built into the smaller K frame cylinder.



It's up to you. My Model 19 came with oversized target grips and I can shoot it pretty much as long as I want without the recoil hurting.








My Model 27 wears smaller Magna grips. But the gun is big and heavy enough that I can shoot it all day long with full power 357 Magnum loads and it does not hurt.

For carry, the 19. For show and braggin' rights, the 27. The 27 would be a superior hunting revolver, too, if that interests you. I've taken deer and hog with the .357, not the most powerful, but quite effective with the right loads.

Sounds like you miss your 19 and want a carry piece....

27 nice....Very nice....but if you are not going to hunt...get the 19!

I agree with every one else. Both are great revolvers, just different sizes for different uses.

If I was going to use it as a carry gun, the 4" model 19 would get my vote. If I was primarily using it as a range gun then the model 27 would be my choice unless you have small hands and the N frame is not comfortable.

First thing i'd want to know is, what year each was made?? At least what dash are they??

Second thing i'd need to know is, what exactly will the gun be used for???

Once i knew that, it would be easy to make the decision.

If it was me, I'd take the Model 19. But that's only because I have two Model 27's and only one 19.

As the others have said, if you planeto carry it, get the 19. If you're just going to shoot it at the range, get the 27.

I favor the K-frames over the N-frames. The K's just handle faster and point more naturally, for me.

I will always take a nice 19 over a nice 27. Good luck with your decision!

For those interested, I traded for the Model 27, it's a dash 2. Beautiful pistol, but wears some older Pachs, need to find a set of S&W grips, now. Thanks for all the input.
