I spotted an online offering for a Smith & Wesson 19-7 which I can't seem to find any information about. According to wiki, the 19-6 is the last of the line until it morphed into the 66 series. Seller says it's an early 90's gun.

The gun looks to be in excellent condition, 4" blued. Anyone know if there is a 19-7 or maybe the -7 is a poorly stamped -1, or?

Edit: just looked at the pictures, barrel is not pinned so not a -1.

A 19-7 would be a 1994 change which deleted wood grips and changed to Uncle Mikes rubber grips.

Also, the frame was drilled & tapped for a scope mount under the adjustable rear sight, plus some other minor changes.

They were discontinued permanently in 1999.

Well, it's for sure not a 19-1, so it must be a 19-7.

Unless it's a FTF sale with no FFL transfer or shipping costs, I think you can do more better.

I might consider $450 with transfer costs added if I just HAD to have a Model 19 of some sort.

But I already have an older and gooder 6" 19 & 4" 66.

The 19-7s were from the early '90s and were transitional: some were built and shipped before the switch to MIM, factory (Uncle Mike's) rubber grips, frame mounted firing pin and modern-style thumb release; most shipped after, so you can find two very different types of 19-7s on the market.

This one certainly appears to be a pre-transition 19-7. If so, might be a nice catch if you prefer target grips, hammer mounted firing pins and forged parts. If it's in NRA very good to excellent shape, $550 is not unreasonable (even more so if it's "mint" like the seller says, though I find this term to have such a wide range of interpretations it approaches meaningless). I would still haggle for the sake of it, and I would certainly put it through a detailed inspection before purchase, to confirm cosmetic and (most importantly) mechanical condition (unless it's being shipped, in which case I wouldn't buy unless the seller agrees to an inspection period).

The last Model 19s were the 19-8s, which finished around 1999. And a note on the Model 66: although it was discontinued later than the Model 19, much of its manufacture dates ran parallel with the 19.

This was a red letter day, the 19-7 found a new home. I asked about price and agreed to $525 subject to inspection. All I can say is I was not prepared for what I saw when the gun was presented. I'm used to having my time wasted on "flawless", "mint", "perfect" and "LNIB" guns. And I understand beauty is in the eye of the beholder, perhaps I've even stretched a bit here and there, but only about fish :)

This model 19-7 is as flawless a gun as I have ever laid eyes on. The blueing is simply remarkable. I thought I'd bought a nice one a few months back, no sirree Bob, this one is rich beyond belief.

Ironically, I was on my way to the range when the seller contacted me so I got to shoot it. It shoots as good as it looks which is to say fantastic. The trigger is a bit different than I'm used to in that it clearly stages in DA, a gentle move from there is darn near a SA feel. I was not as consistently accurate with it as say the 27-2 I had with me, but I was as consistent (which is to say the holes were grouped nicely, just not always around the bulls eye).

I'm sure I'd feel more elated if I'd won Powereball today, but not by much, OK that's probably a lie, but you get my drift. Excited as all get out!

Thanks rcmodel and Hapworth!

Sounds like a good score at the right price -- congrats, hope the 19 serves you well and is a pleasure.
