Well, it looks like I am leaving Texas again and this time for at least 3 years. I am going back to Alaska and back to land surveying in remote areas. I am putting together my list of handguns to take with me (mostly for hobby shooting, but also for carrying), as the rest will be moving to a secured facility.

It's pretty much a no brainer for most of them, especially the rifles. For the handguns, my S&W 629-1 6", 66-2 4" (for my wife who is also a land surveyor), Colt Delta Elite, 1991 NRM government, and Glock 20 will all be going.

I know this is really splitting hairs, but the one that has me hung up is which N frame .357 to take. The choice is between a 27-2 5" and a 28-2 4". Out of all of my firearms, the 27-2 5" is my favorite. I have two of them. One of them with a regular trigger and hammer and one of them with 3 Ts. I would be taking the one with the regular trigger.

Here are the relative advantages and disadvantages that I see:

27-2:

Advantage:
1. I love it.
2. It's the revolver that I want on my hip when the time comes.

Disadvantage:
1. To put it through the tough environment I will be in and the rust that will almost certainly follow will bother me some.
2. It is harder to carry IWB.

28-2

Advantage:
1. It wouldn't bother me to use this revolver in the manner it should be used.
2. Rust and finish loss would just add character to this fine revolver.
3. I have an IWB and OWB holster for it that fit well.

Disadvantage:
1. Not much, but it doesn't give me the same warm and fuzzy feeling as the 27-2 5".

What do you think?

Which is why I voted for the M-28.

Rub a coat of Break-Free or M-Pro 7 on your M27 and take the "better" gun with you for protection. From everything you posted you like the M27 better so take the M27.

I would choose a 28-2. I bought one four months ago as a shooter. Best revolver I have for shooting 357s. I decided not to buy a 27 with a 2.5 " because I wanted a shooter not a safe queen.

i'd take the M-27...if just for the warm fuzzy feeling.

with the size of the frame, the 4" barrel always felt like a snubby to me...as a matter a fact the M-27's short barrel used to be 3.5". the 5" barrel is long enough for me to feel the difference, while i 6.5" one felt clunky.

my preferrence would be to pack it in an Alessi Field Master

I wish I had your problems :)

Seriously, if I liked the 27 as much as you claim to, I would not subject it to the abuse. My guns are not safe queens, but I do take pride in their appearance and condition, and I would not willingly abuse something as pretty as a five-inch M-27...

I voted for the m28, you already have a holster and it will be a pretty unfriendly environment for a blued revolver.

On a somewhat unrelated topic what holster are you using for IWB carry of the m28?

I would keep the blued guns for fun, and get a stainless gun to carry in the field. A 627 Pro (4") or 627PC (5"). They are both great. Barrel length per your personal preference.

I had the same thought as ClemY. To me, it sounds like an excellent opportunity to buy a 4" 686!

If the conditions are harsh, I would take that instead of a 27 or 28. A 686 can usually ride fine in a holster that fits a 4" n frame well, probably no need for extra leather.
